WordPress 2.9 Feature Focus Batch Plug-in Updates

WordPress 2.9 (Carmen) has been officially released and has quite a few new features.  Some are visible and right on the page while many others are under the hood.  One of the features that I really like is the ability to bulk update my plug-ins.  In previous versions of WordPress you had to update each plug-in individually by clicking on the automatic upgrade link in the WordPress plug-in, entering your FTP credentials and then waiting for the update to happen. If you had a lot of plug-ins this process could take a while to do. To utilize the new bulk update process go to the Tools>Upgrade menu in the admin panel:    There you will find a screen that looks something like this": Select the check boxes for all the plug-ins you want to update and then press the Upgrade Plug-in button at the bottom and you will then be […]

WordPress Hack, WordPress Plugins

Publish The Feed Later: WP Engineer provides a nice tutorial on how to publish your post to your feed a few minutes (configurable) after you publish your post. These few minutes can help you find errors or bugs in your post and fix them before they get sent out via your feed to all your readers. The “hack” requires you to change your theme’s functions.php file and add the code snippet provided. Alternatively you could also use a plugin written by our very own Keith, called Feed Pauser. I see no compatibility information on this plugin (maybe Keith could chime in and let us know) but it does offer further functionality such as the ability to prevent individual posts from appearing in your feed. A useful hack/plugin for those like me who have an itchy post finger.

Blogging Essays, WordPress Plugins

Preface The act of adopting an abandoned plugin reminds me of adopting an orphaned child. On the one hand, the new parents are taking on someone who they didn’t help raise thus far, which forces them to “learn” the ways of the new child to communicate well with them. On the other hand, the new parent is left with the fear that there will come a day that the old parent will come to claim their rights on the child. The analogy I brought can go some way in building an intuition about the problem of orphaned plugins, but if we want to go beyond just intuition we need to take a more in-depth look at the subject. I hope such a look will inspire a discussion that will benefit us all. The chase for a faster plugin installation My prime example for an orphan plugin for this post will […]
