On Thursday, December 18th, I had the honor of having a fireside chat so to speak with Matt Mullenweg. The chat lasted a little over two hours and then, Matt stayed around after the show for an additional two hours to field questions from anybody that asked them. There are a number of things that I have taken away with this chat with Matt and I’ll be listing those in an article in the following days but without a shadow of a doubt, Matt is a stand up guy. He answered all of my questions, even the tough ones which were submitted by the community. While there is room left to debate the GPL and what is or isn’t compliant, Matt answered the GPL questions to the best of his ability and in most cases, his answers are nothing more than his personal opinion since certain aspects of the GPL […]

If you are a premium theme developer or have an interest in WordPress themes, you may have heard that over 200 themes were removed from the WordPress.org theme repository. The reasons behind the removals have yet to be made public and there is more afoot than just the removal of themes. Over the course of the past few days, debates and discussions have been taking place on numerous blogs regarding WordPress, the GPL, themes and much more. Matt has agreed to appear on WordPress Weekly on Thursday at 1 P.M. EST to set the record straight so to speak. My goal for this special episode of the show is to get an explanation as to what happened with the theme repository, the new guidelines, Matt’s stance on the GPL, the entire issue of premium themes, what will happen with plugins and a whole lot more. This episode is really important […]

Ozh, a WordPress community superstar in his own right has compiled an awesome post highlighting the WordPress interface from version 0.7.1 which was released in May of 2003 all the way up to WordPress 2.7. Along with pictures, Ozh gives us a bit of background information for each version. If you’re like me and didn’t start using WordPress until around 2.2/2.3, this post should serve as an excellent reminder on how far WordPress has come. I can’t help but wonder, how many of you will get that nostalgic feeling when viewing those screenshots. Hat tip goes to The BlogHerald. While you’re here, drop us a comment and let us know what was the first version of WordPress you used?

Episode 33 Kenn Bell of TheDogFiles.com as well as Jason Schuller who is one half of the Revolution 2 project. This was a great combination of guests as Kenn initially created the design for TheDogFiles site while Jason applied his code ninja skills to make the design a reality. Here are a couple of bullet points of discussion from this episode: Brief discussion of WordPress 2.7 Why WordPress was chosen as the publishing platform of choice The design and implementation of TheDogFiles website The Revolution 2 project Last but not least, since Jason is a prominent theme designer in the WordPress community, I took the opportunity to have a small discussion with him regarding the removal of 200 themes from the WordPress repository. We did talk a little bit about the GPL and we also discussed the Revolution 2 business model. Announcements: Andy Peatling of the BuddyPress project will be […]

Due to some obligations which sprang up, Keith was unable to make it for this episode. So while schools, automakers, and banks ask for bailout packages, I had to do the same thing and you delivered. Special thanks to those who called in and turned what would have been a boring show into a great discussion on a number of topics. Enhanced WordPress Theme Generator

Over the weekend, I caught word of a brand new WordPress theme generator that was written by Ryan Hellyer of Pixopoint.com. The generator lets you configure various aspects of a WordPress theme such as the sidebars, headings, footer, etc. Once you’re finished, you can export the files and use the theme on your own blog. I got in touch with Ryan over the weekend and this is what he had to say. What is the PixoPoint template generator and what is it capable of doing? The PixoPoint template generator is an automated web based system for creating WordPress themes. By using the control bar on the left hand side of the template generator you are able to modify a wide range of features on the website. I’ve included some standard templates to start people off, but the sky is really the limit. By changing images, colours, widths, number of sidebars, […]

At approximately 19:38:33 on December 1, 2008 Ryan Boren became the owner of the 10,000th changeset to the WordPress code. This particular code set change was a re-ordering of font families for Windows font selection that was initially patched by Matt Thomas. There has been a discussion taking place within the WP-Testers mailing list that the Bitstream font is horrible and that it needed to be replaced by Verdana. Looks like they received their wish. By the way, the first Changeset to appear since the WordPress team began using Trac happened on April 1, 2003 (6 years ago). The changeset involved a new respository initialized by cvs2svn and the author is anonymous. cvs2svn is a program that can be used to migrate a CVS repository to Subversion (otherwise known as “SVN”) or git. Documentation: A hearty congratulations goes out to not only the core development team, but to all those […]

For quite awhile now, I’ve been monitoring a specific blog post from May 15th, 2007 which is a tutorial on how to migrate from Drupal 5 to WordPress 2. Many things have changed since then between both pieces of software and thus, the scripts provided on the site will not work. Every now and then, someone publishes a comment that contains a link to an updated version of the script to work with newer versions of Drupal and WordPress. DovDox is the latest blog to publish an updated portion of the script albeit with a caveat. Taking my usual hacksaw-and-duct-tape approach, I simply deleted the portions that didn’t work. That means my version moved all of the posts and comments to the new blog, but didn’t preserve any of their categories. Drupal’s ridiculous “taxonomy” system just isn’t easy to map onto WordPress’s much more rational categories and tags, and in […]
