Blogging, WordPress

WordCamp 2007 starts today (well, there were some festivities yesterday) and since I have to miss it again this year, I hope some visitors record the presentations and provide podcasts for the rest of us. The speakers list includes some pretty cool people that I would have liked to listen to and meet but C’est la Vie. I hear there is going to be some cool schwag as well. If you are at Wordcamp, did you hear or see anything cool? Are you having a good time? Please contact me with reports if you think they are bloggable. Just a word of warning, I am on the road, so response/posting will be slow.

iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme by ContentRobot: The iWPhone WordPress Plugin and Theme automatically reformats your blog’s content for optimized viewing on Apple’s iPhone. It detects the iPhone’s User Agent and serves up the content with the special theme only to iPhone visitors, all other browsers will view your WordPress blog with your current theme. Delish! A classmate of mine is an AT&T regional manager and has an iPhone. I will be checking out WeblogToolsCollection.com in <sarcasm>glorious EDGE speeds</sarcasm> tomorrow! 🙂

Index of /wp-content/plugins – Google Search: I am not sure what to make of this search but not only are there a lot of self hosted WordPress blogs, too many of them allow their plugin folder to be indexed. I performed this search because I noticed a crawler on a couple of my blogs that was indexing my plugins and that alarmed me a little. I do not allow my plugin folder to be indexed since I consider that too risky. The homepage of the crawler lists various plugins and their propensity in the WordPress Blogosphere. I imagine the crawler browses the plugins folder of each new blog discovered and if that folder can be browsed, it tries to crawl the various plugin php files it is aware of while looking for 404s and empty strings. I stop short of suggesting that everyone protect their plugins folder because if the […]

CSS for code: Wrap long lines

Code, HOW-TO, WordPress

If you post code on your WordPress blog, you could use a code beautifier plugin such as syntax highlighter or you could include your code in <pre> tags. They preserve line breaks, multiple blanks, tabs between words and other formatting commonly used in code. However, in some cases, if body of your blog is narrow(er) or your line of code is really long, it will not wrap and will overflow over your sidebar. You can just hide the overflow but that still will look tacky and not very usable. On performing a little search, I discovered that Tyler Longren had already come up with a clever hack to solve the problem. If you add the following code to your stylesheet, it will wrap the long lines of code. pre { white-space: pre-wrap; /* css-3 */ white-space: -moz-pre-wrap !important; /* Mozilla, since 1999 */ white-space: -pre-wrap; /* Opera 4-6 */ white-space: […]

The WordPress Plugin Competition 2.0 has been getting a lot of good press in the past few weeks and we already have four interesting and useful plugins announced for the competition. If you are planning to participate, why don’t you register on the PluginBlog and post your announcement? The last date to submit your plugin is the 31st of July. Lots of new prizes have been announced for the competition including over $700 in prize money from myself, Ajay, Jonathan and Darren, a Hostgator sponsored dedicated server for a year, an 8GB iPod Nano from Imthiaz, more hosting from PJMommy, a signed copy of Lorelle’s new book and a copy of Angsuman’s latest Translator Pro. Thanks to Matt, Lorelle and others for helping to promote the competition. Oz and Lorelle have also helped me make the PluginBlog more user friendly and clean it up. Ajay is helping me judge the […]

WP Plugin: Listen Button: Create instant podcasts from your blog text with this plugin from Odiogo.com. It creates a “Listen” button on your blog that people can click to listen to the text of a post. The content is read by a machine and the voice stream is linked in a flash player format on your blog. The mp3 resides on the Odiogo server and can also be downloaded. Weblog Tools Collection can now be downloaded in a podcast format with the help of this service. You can do the same for your blog by signing up for their podcast service. I am not sure this format makes sense for the staccato delivery of this blog but it might be a cool feature for blogs with longer articles and lesser linked content. At the very least, it is a novelty  for any blogger that always wanted to hear themselves type […]

Pride is a three column, hybrid, rounded edge, lighweight, blue and yellow theme for WordPress that is very Blogger-esque. The theme elements have a comic like quality and looks very polished. Pride is authored by Small Potato and is released under the GPL. Prosumer is a three column, widget ready, white background, somewhat bare theme for WordPress by Jauhari. The “somewhat bare”ness of the theme is made up by the nicely placed accent graphics and the smooth flow of the theme. Clean Copy is a widget ready, two column, well spaced out, somewhat light theme for WordPress with blue and white colors and five random header graphics. SilkStream is a dark, three column, blue on black theme from Milo. It is widget ready, has a sideblog , recent comments, related posts and flickr RSS. Spiritual Journey is a three column, left and right sidebar, widget ready theme for WordPress with […]
