WordPress is a nonprofit open source blogging platform, which means that absolutely no one is paid to offer support (unless you actually hire a contractor, of course), so all help is offered through the Support Forums by volunteers and all documentation is provided through the Codex by volunteers. If you know what you’re doing, why not stop by to help out a bit? In fact, even if you’re just starting with WordPress, I bet there are a few folks that you could help. After all, that’s how I got my start. Helping out is easy to do, and there are some handy guides for new Support Forum volunteers and new Codex editors. Don’t worry about getting your answer wrong the first couple of times, someone will correct you and help you out, it’s all part of learning. In fact, helping someone else is often the best way to learn yourself.

WordPress is an open source blogging platform, which (amongst other things) means that everything is built out in the open. You can freely follow along or even participate in development. If you’re curious about what’s going on under the hood, the best thing to follow is the WordPress Trac. This is where all of the magic happens, bugs and features are submitted, discussed, and acted upon all through this one site. Of course, if that’s a bit too much code and you’re looking for a more toned down highlight-oriented news and discussion blog, check out the official WordPress Development Updates. Here, you can follow along on major issues or changes. Think of it a sneak peak to the future of WordPress. Follow along and learn what makes your favorite blogging platform so great. Before you know it, you might be filing your first bug report, or even your first patch.

We had previously mentioned the first printing of WPCandy Quarterly, a WordPress related quarterly print magazine from the folks at WPCandy, and now it looks like the first issue has begun shipping to folks who had pre-ordered it. This is quite possibly the first ever printed WordPress publication, at least I can’t find any others, so this is a rather monumental occasion. It sounds like there are plenty left after pre-orders, so you should still be able to order one if you missed out. The images in the shipment announcement post look great, so if you have received your copy, we’d love to hear what you think. Update: To clarify, I meant that this is quite possibly the first ever printed WordPress magazine publication.

Getting Started with a Starter Theme

responses

There has been a lot of talk lately about using starter themes to build your own unique WordPress themes, especially now that the new _s starter theme is available, but many are asking just how to get started in the first place. Fortunately, the same folks behind _s have released a quick starter guide for their starter theme. At its most basic, pretend that you’re building your theme just like you would a new house, but in this case you’re hiring someone else to lay the foundation for you. Without a good solid foundation, it doesn’t matter how well you construct the frame or paint the walls, that house will fall down eventually. This is exactly what a good starter theme is, it’s the foundation, with just about everything you need to start a good theme. When starting with a starting theme, the first thing you’ll need to do is […]

A New Starter Theme from the Automattic Theme Team

There are many folks out there who would love to make their own WordPress theme, but it’s often hard to get started without a reliable template. Sure, you could grab the Toolbox theme, but it’s a bit out of date, so it wouldn’t be the best platform to get started on. This brings us to the new _s starter theme from the Automattic Theme Team. _s is a complete starter theme, it’s free, open source, and ready to be used by you today. Unlike Toolbox, _s is not designed to just serve as a parent theme for a mere child theme, it is really designed to be used as a template for your next great theme, or as described a “1,000 hour head start.” _s will always be in flux, upgrading and adapting to the latest web technologies, so that you’ll always have the tools you need when you’re ready to start your […]

After being in the planning stage for a few months, the first ever WP on Tour was a huge success. The goal of WP on Tour was to bring WordPress fans from around the world for a solid week of fun and co-working, and this first WP on Tour brought ten WordPress fans and developers to Sitges, Spain. The crew worked together on a few client and personal projects, and some of the biggest releases of the week were major updates to WP Stripe and YouTube DJ. As for the fun aspect, they were kind enough to snap several photos throughout the week. Does this look like fun to you? If so, you might want to host a WP on Tour event in your home town.

WPCandy Quarterly, a WordPress related quarterly print magazine from the folks at WPCandy, is just about to be mailed out to the lucky readers who either pre-ordered or subscribed. To my knowledge, or at least about half an hour of searching, this may very well be the first ever printed WordPress magazine publication. The first issue will feature articles from 11 well-known contributors, and due to demand from the pre-orders, 2,000 copies are making their way through the printers as you read this. A lot of thought went into the design of this magazine, and you can see a video blazing through the various drafts below. It’s not too late to reserve your copy, so if you want to be a part of this historical launch, you should place your order soon before they’re shipped.

WordPress, WordPress Plugins

PressTrends has released a rather fascinating plugin for WordPress blogs. The plugin will allow you to measure various metrics for your posts, comments, and plugin usage, and compare these to averages across the entire PressTrends community. The feature list may be just a bit basic now, but there are more features on the way, the design is very clean-cut, and if you’re interested to see how you’re doing versus “the status quo,” this is definitely the way to do it. If you’re a theme designer, you might also be interested in their core product, which provides metrics for theme usage.

iThemes has now added a huge student discount to their popular Web Designer’s Toolkit. The new Student Edition offers full-time students in the US and Canada access to over 150 themes, over 20 plugins, and over 300 hours of training for only $97 ($880 less than the original). Folks with a strong memory may notice the similarity to iThemes’s Educator Program. While the Student Edition of the toolkit is not free, the $880 discount is something that can’t be beat, especially if you’re busy spending money on your tuition. If you have plans to launch a WordPress-focused career in design, consulting, maintenance, and other such things, this is a great way to get a head start.
