Phone Your Blog — WordPress.com: Matt wrote a post yesterday about a new feature WordPress.com is testing using which a blogger on WordPress.com could get it set up, receive a special number and code and then call in to make a post. Interesting concept indeed. This is made possible by Twilio. Not yet available for self hosted WordPress blogs.

Actually this should not be a big surprise for those of us who frequent sites like this to see that the latest version of WordPress is moving out the door at this kind of pace. If you want to watch the parade of downloads then you should check out this site: http://wordpress.org/download/counter/ Personally I do not remember a similar download counter on past versions but that does not mean it did not exist.  Maybe someone from WordPress can comment on how this versions download pace compares to past updates. I think that would be interesting to know and compare. I grabbed this screenshot at 8:20 AM EDT just to give you a frame of reference I did some very rough calculations and watched the counter for 60 seconds to get an idea of just how fast those downloads are happening: 50 downloads per minute 3,000 downloads per hour 72,000 downloads […]

There are 119 plug-ins in the WordPress Extend site that have the words backup and database in the descriptions.  That in turn makes for a lot of options when it comes to backing up your critical data for your WordPress based website. A recent addition to the mix not only offers you a backup solution but they offer you a backup solution in the cloud. The IDrive WordPress plug-in allows you access to your IDrive backup account and it works with either the free basic account or a paid account.  The free account offers up to 2GB of storage which should accommodate most sites.  If you need more space you can get their entry level paid account for less than $5 per month that allows you to store up to 150GB. Here is a description of the plug-in and its features from the developers: IDrive Plug-in for WordPress is an […]

WordPress 3.0 is almost out the door and one of the most exciting developments regarding the new version is the menu management system. This system started as a major contribution from WooThemes with their WooNav code but since it’s integration, the WooNav code has been reworked practically line for line to the point where there is almost nothing left of the original. At the time, WooThemes was heralded as an awesome company for contributing such a great piece of functionality to the core of WordPress. I still believe it’s great they contributed WooNav to the menu system but now things get dicey when it comes to how much credit should be given to WooThemes. There have been a few posts discussing the credit factor and WooThemes concerning the new menu system. Some people think WooThemes deserves more credit while others think that credit has been given where credit was due. […]

HOW-TO, Tutorials, WordPress

WordPress 3.0 Walkthrough: Multsite Multisite is the most talked about new feature in WordPress 3.0 – the WordPress team has folded the functionality of WordPress Multiuser into the main WordPress project. So how do you use it? This tutorial assumes your are comfortable using FTP clients such as Filezilla and doing basic edits of WordPress files. 1. Download WordPress 3.0 release candidate. You can find it here. 2. Edit wp-config in your favorite text editor and add the following line: define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true); (I’d suggest adding it just above the line “// ** MySQL settings – You can get this info from your web host ** //”) 3. Install WordPress normally NOTE: If you’ve already installed WordPress 3.0, just edit wp-config and add that line of code, there’s no need to re-install. 4. Under Tools on the sidebar, you’ll now have an “Network” option. Click it. 5. Here you’ll setup your […]

Within this review, I will provide an objective view on the video-hosting service called VideoPress (owned by Automattic). Now I will be one of the first to admit that I am somewhat of an Automattic fanboi. I love WordPress, and use several of Automattic’s other services. However, even I was skeptical of what I considered a too-good-to-be-true video-hosting service. A Little Background I have been hosting my videos on YouTube for quite a while now. I especially liked their new HD feature and the ability for my screencast software to export directly to the service. I didn’t (and still, really don’t) care that the YouTube player is branded and shows ads. It worked, and worked well, and that’s really all I cared about it. And best of all, it was free. However, I ran into a roadblock with some of my videos. The ten-minute time-limit was really started to kill […]

Moving Your WordPress Site and Database

There comes a time you may have to leave one web host for another. No matter the reason the idea of relocating an entire website – especially one that has been online for sometime – can seem very daunting. With a WordPress based site – I found it easier than expected – way easier. My WindowsObserver.com website has 1,100 posts, 9 pages, 4 categories, 2,436 comments, uses 17 widgets, and has 35 active plug-ins. On top of all those elements I use Windows Live Writer to create all of my content and I use a good bit of screenshots and graphics in my posts. As a result I have over 40MB of images (1,100 files) to go along with my 1,100 postings. Now for the purposes of this story I am not going to get into a comparison of hosting services or the like. The landscape is massive out there […]

WordPress, WordPress News, WordPress Plugins

About a month ago I was augmenting a client site with some added functionality that, while technically out of scope, I was able to add quickly thanks to a plugin. For whatever reason on this particular instance, I was really struck by how much value I was able to add to a client site thanks to that  plugin. There was relatively little effort on my part to make the client happy due to a significant level of effort by the developer that built the plugin. Regardless, it didn’t cost me, or my client anything more than a little time. Because I realized how much more I’ve been able to do with almost every site I’ve built in the last two years thanks to plugins, I decided to try to start a movement, not out of guilt or self interest, as I have never released a plugin, but rather out of gratitude to the […]
