Microsoft Web Platform: Microsoft has added WordPress, Drupal, DotNetNuke, Gallery and a few other applications to the Microsoft Web App Gallery. The Microsoft Web Platform Installer 2.0 installs PHP and includes WordPress and other PHP applications by default. What is not immediately obvious is whether this version of WordPress has been modified to work with SQL Server Express and IIS that is included with the Web Platform or whether MySql is included as part of the install. If you have installed the Platform, what are you impressions? The Industry Standard has an interesting take on this bundling as well.

So on the day of the release of the much [add verb of choice here] Internet Explorer 8, we would like to know what happens to your WordPress blog in IE 8. Does anything look different? Does anything work? How about the Dashboard or the admin interface? Did you find any problems? Are you tearing your hair out or are you grinning from ear to ear? Would you suggest that everyone upgrade or would you suggest that we stay away? This is one of those times that I wish we allowed the posting of screenshots along with the comments on this blog but links to screenshots would be much appreciated. Anyone know of a plugin that allows posting of screenshots in comments?

WordCamp India is On!. The list of speakers is quite impressive and includes both Matt and Om for various talks including Matt’s famous “State of the Word“. It looks to be a fun and information filled event with quite interesting fare such as SEO, IP rights and other both techie and non-techie topics. As luck would have it, I am going to be traveling though Dubai and India next weekend (days late, dollars short) and will not be able to attend. It has been a week since we put this new design into production at Weblog Tools Collection. Though at first it was quite a change, the design is growing on me. A few things are still broken (find any?) and the internal code and the SQL queries that run the plugins are still being tweaked. We might end up re-writing a few of the plugins to make them more efficient and introduce caching. Our overall goal was to make the blog feel fresh and be able to highlight the various aspects of our community that helps generate and produce and news and the articles for this blog. Needless to say, we stuck to our basic tenets of minimal advertising and ease of use while sticking with a light (on the eyes and on the bandwidth) and minimalist theme. So for some reason that I can no longer remember, I had to log into FeedBurner to do something. I was greeted with an odd message that appeared to say that FeedBurner would cease to exist and I would have to migrate my account to Google. I have become wary of attaching my Google account to my other important services after their recent gaffe and was about to click “No Thanks” when I realized that the page was telling me that if I did not do it manually, they would be moved for me anyways. Since I had no choice, I went through the paces to move my FeedBurner services to Google. The move was mostly uneventful and I was told that while my feeds were being transferred, I could close the browser window and know that they would be safely transferred. Mastering WordPress Shortcodes.: Smashing Magazine had a nice instructional writeup on mastering WordPress shortcodes and creating new ones to make one’s blogging life easier. Shortcodes are small peices of pre-determined code (viewable in the HTML version of a post) that are later expanded by WordPress when a post is published and subsequently displayed. Shortcodes are already used by WordPress for many internal functions such as albums. This tutorial goes into details of the shortcode API in WordPress and into some detail of creating advanced shortcodes to accomplish tasks such as Send to Twitter (or consequently, send to Techmeme via Twitter) Create an RSS feed link Insert Adsense into a post Insert an RSS reader into a post Add shortcodes to sidebars Please let us know if you have used any of these or know of/have created others that might be useful.

New way to get on Techmeme: send tips to Techmeme via Twitter: Techmeme is now accepting tips via Twitter. They are using Twitter’s search API to look for incoming tips. Techmeme is my first read every morning and now that the site is partially human edited, there is the desire and the ability for readers to suggest news. Of particular interest is the Techmeme suggest button to add to your site or blog. Anyone know of a WordPress plugin that does this automagically yet?
