Is It Time For Kubrick To Retire?

Dion Hulse a.k.a. DD32 who is a very active WordPress contributor created a ticket in Trac about eight weeks ago outlining his proposal for a new theme to be based on the current WordPress codebase. It’s long been known that a majority of themes that are created for WordPress end up using Kubrick as the base theme. In this day in age, that is not such a good idea as this leads to themes that are not easy to customize, little documentation, and possibly ugly code. DD32’s proposal for a new base theme contains the following suggestions: Uses clean markup Has a basic style included, Which is designed to be replaced. The default style should be able to be used by itself, But it should be in such a way that its simple to be customized Doesn’t rely upon fixed width styling, or fixed background images Uses limited JavaScript Uses […]

WordPress Plugins

Some of you may remember that back on January 15th, I asked if you had ever published a blog post via email. Many of you in the comments let me know that you enjoyed using Postie but wished it contained some of the same features that are found with the Posterous service. According to Robert Felty who has taken over development of the plugin, the new version of Postie enables the following: Postie offers many advanced features for posting to your blog via e-mail, including the ability to assign categories by name, included pictures and videos, and automatically strip off signatures. It also has support for both imap and pop3, with the option for ssl with both. The latest version which is 1.1.5 contains the following feature set: Added option to have postie posts be pending review, published, or draft Settings panel only shows up for administrators Need not be […]

Scott Wallick, the author of the popular and well known Sandbox theme has announced on his personal blog that he is selling the Sandbox domain along with Plaintxt.org. The sale does not include the actual themes since they have been developed and released under the GPL license. Scott does provide a reason for why he is selling the domains: I have withdrawn from the WordPress community. Active development of my themes and plugins has stopped simply because I am unable to continue the necessary development. In a way, they have a life of their own. If you would like the opportunity to chat with Scott Wallick about his involvement with the WordPress community, be sure to tune in to this weeks episode of WordPress Weekly as he will be my special guest.

WordPress Weekly

Episode 40 of WordPress Weekly discussed a wide range of topics from the release of WordPress MU 2.7 to the All In One SEO Plugin reaching one million downloads. Also sad to say that this was Keith Murray’s last episode as co-host. I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Special Announcement: Kym Huynh co-host of the WordPress centric podcast, WordCast was in a terrible car accident. Kym was in the middle of a three week vacation celebrating his recent graduation from law school when he ended up in a bad car accident. Unfortunately, Kym suffered quite a few broken bones and now has a metal arm. Dave Moyer of DaveMoyer.org, producer of show published an email he received from Kym earlier today that can be read on the DaveMoyer.org website. I personally wish Kym a fast and speedy recovery. Please visit DaveMoyer.org to find out how […]

On the evening of Tuesday, January 27th, I had the pleasure to converse with Michael Pick, an employee of Automattic and also the guy behind the newly launched WordPress.TV. WordPress.TV is a new website which aggregates all sorts of WordPress content in video form. The site has already made a name for itself by showcasing many of the videos from recent WordCamps. Here is just a sampling of what we discussed during the show. Here are some of the questions we covered on the show: What is the purpose of WordPress.TV? How did WordPress.TV reach fruition? Will WordPress.TV feature content created by people other than Automattic? What do you plan on doing with videos that seemingly disappear? Can someone suggest a video that is produced with a language other than English? If there were any plans to let the videos be downloadable or even a podcast? Are WordPress.tv videos released […]

It’s not often that we feature plugins or themes that you have to pay for but when the product is fully compliant with the GPL, things are gravy! In this special episode of WordPress Weekly, we talk e-commerce with Jonathan Davis who is the developer of the Shopp E-Commerce plugin for WordPress. Jonathan gives us the low down on what his plugin has to offer. What is also interesting is his business model. The plugin is fully compliant under the GPL but without purchasing the update Key, you won’t be able to upgrade the software. If you’re interested in learning about an e-commerce solution for WordPress, definitely take a listen to this episode. Disclaimer: This interview was not purchased or is sponsored in any way. Here are some of the questions we covered on the show: Why did you create Shopp when WP-Ecommerce was already available? Speaking of WP-Ecommerce, what […]

There are a number of options available to publish articles to your blog outside of your WordPress Write panel such as through XML-RPC via a third party blogging client or through an application such as the one available for the iPhone. However, did you know that you can also publish posts through email? It’s true! The feature has been around for quite some time. For how long I’m not sure because I was unable to track down when it became a core feature but it looks like it has been around since 1.5 or below. For directions on how to use this unique feature, I recommend reading this comprehensive article on the Codex entitled Blog By Email. Posting by email in WordPress is limited to pretty much text only. Common HTML tags are stripped and attachments that are sent with the email will appear in their raw form in the […]
