Thesis Adopts a Split GPL License

23
responses

Thesis has officially adopted a split GPL license, putting an end to the explosive debate between WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg and Thesis developer Chris Pearson which launched a community-wide discussion on the GPL and WordPress themes.

To clarify the split GPL license, Chris Pearson adds, “the PHP is GPLv2 and the CSS, JS, and images are proprietary.” Specifically, this means that Thesis no longer violates the GPL of WordPress and the several plugins that Thesis was based on. Matt Mullenweg was thrilled to hear the news, replying with, “Now, back to work. This has taken a lot of my time over the past few days and was going to consume more if it went forward.”

It is unknown if this will have any affect on Mr. Pearson’s business.  While the split GPL license now allows the core of Thesis be redistributed by a third-party either free or for a fee, the rest of Thesis is still protected and would therefore require extensive work to redistribute anything like it.  In addition to the proprietary portions of Thesis, Mr. Mullenweg mentioned in the original debate that Thesis is “more than just a code and a theme; it is the forums, the support, the community, and all the things around it that make it valuable. That is not something that someone in another country selling it for half-price is going to be able to duplicate because they don’t have you.”

WordPress 3.0 Twenty Ten Theme Updated

responses

twentytenthemeshot

Just in case you missed it the default theme in WordPress 3.0 has been updated to version 1.1.  If your running WordPress 3.0 you should find an update indicator in your admin panel under Dashboard > Updates.

So when I saw this update a couple of days ago I went off in search of what was updated.  Unfortunately there is not a changelog in the WordPress.org Themes Directory and a quick search did not yield very much at that time.

However, today when I made that same search I finally got some results and although it is not a changelog with a detailed listing of what has been updated it is from one of the WordPress Devs, Andrew Nacin and appears in the WordPress Support Themes and Templates forum:

Hey all —

The only real change is that I removed the half-baked code using the wp_title hook in order to customize the page title, and instead the code was moved back into header.php and simplified a little.

I can call it half-baked because I was the one who wrote it. It interfered with some plugins and so we yanked it. Twenty Ten is also likely going to be picked apart by up-and-coming theme developers, and I didn’t want my inventive technique to gain any traction. (I’d much prefer we introduce a replacement wp_title(), which you’ll likely see in a future release.)

We also made a few minor changes to attachment/media styling and markup. Just some tiny improvements for a few edge cases.

There’s a ton of other small changes in there — style.css for example — but they’re all stylistic. (Ha! — get it?) We alphabetized the CSS properties because that’s what the theme guys like. 🙂

I see Mo already posted the full diff. If you’d prefer for your head to not explode, here’s the log of commit messages:http://core.trac.wordpress.org/log/branches/3.0/wp-content/themes/twentyten/.

Hope that helps.

Nacin

So it seems to have been a general clean up and tweaking of the theme.  If you desperately want to see the specifics then you can check out that last link he provided – there is a lot of detail there and personally makes my head hurt Smile.

It is good to see that there is an intent to make this theme work with all the third party stuff that is out there. I think a big part of WordPress success is the attitude and desire of the devs and other contributors to make it the best it can be.

Keep up the great work everyone.

WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” is out!

12
responses

As of yesterday, WordPress 3.0 “Thelonious” is out of beta and ready to be installed! There is a lot to look forward to in this point oh version, including a whole bunch of new features, a whole new default theme called Twenty Ten, integration of WordPress MU and multiple blogs into WordPress (boy that seems like such a huge goal from just a few years ago to compete with MT) and a whole slew of bugfixes. The WordPress produced video is embedded below. This is a big one and I am really looking forward to having our team dive into the nitty gritty of this release as soon as possible.

Six Revisions has an ultimate guide to the new features in WordPress 3.0, while Rohand Mehta tells us of the 10 features that he is looking forward to in WordPress 3.0. I also really appreciated Navjot’s list of Template Changes/Tags for WordPress 3.0

What other WordPress 3.0 resources are you reading to catch up?

WordPress Theme Releases for 06/13

responses

Good morning everyone. Hope you are having a great weekend. For your Sunday morning reading pleasure we bring you the latest installment of WordPress Theme Releases. Enjoy!

Tumblelog Reloaded

Tumblelog Reloaded is the 4th theme from UK-based Polaraul Themes that we’ve featured here at WLTC. This theme is a rework of the Tumblelog theme by Safirul Alredha. Some of its features include:

  • custom page to post photo, quote, link, chat and video
  • automatically format each post based on post type
  • automatically resize large images/photos
  • microformats hAtom and xFolk friendly

It also comes with a theme uninstaller.

The Daily Edition

The Daily Edition from Theme Sheep is a magazine-style theme that comes shipped with a whopping 7 different colour schemes to choose from. It has built-in pagination and breadcrumb navigation as well as “related posts” and features some cool animated social bookmarking icons. From the theme’s options page you can do all sorts of things such as:

  • Include links to your RSS feed, Feedburner feed, Facebook page and Twitter page
  • Include some custom CSS
  • Include some custom footer content
  • Select your colour scheme
  • Select how many large posts to display on your front page. You can also decide how to display those posts – either full content or excerpts. If you choose excerpts you can even decide what length of excerpt you want.
  • Select how many small posts to display on your front page. As is the case with the large posts, you can decide if you want to show full content or excerpts including the desired length of excerpts.

These are just a few features. There are many more.

Intention

Intention is a sharp-looking 2 column theme with a widgetized right sidebar and sports a horizontal navigation drop down menu for displaying pages.

Minimal Xpert

Don’t let the name or appearance of this theme fool you. It may have a minimalistic look but contains oodles of goodies under the hood. From the theme’s slick options page, some of the things you can do are:

  • Include a custom favicon
  • Enable/disable thumbnails on both the home page and individual post pages
  • Enable/disable the home page slider
  • Exclude pages/categories from the horizontal nav menus
  • Enable/disable the “related posts” feature
  • Activate/deactivate the sidebar advertisement block

You can even elect to activate/deactivate the “extended footer” feature. When activated, your site will display a 4 column footer containing an “about me” section, a list of recent posts, a blogroll and your Twitter stream.

We hope you have enjoyed this edition of WordPress Theme Releases. As always, you’re welcome to share your thoughts with us. We value your feedback.
