The Blogging Essay Competition ended on January 14th but I have been giving the latest few entries some time to catch up in the number of votes. People were still voting on the entries till about a week ago when interest dropped. If you have not read through the entries or voted, I am sure the authors would appreciate your encouragement. I will tally the results at the end of this week and post the winners on Sunday. If I have not said so already, thank you for your participation. [EDIT] Since there is some confusion, we are not extending the competition, but extending the judging time to get all the entries similar exposure to reader reviews.

This blog is now running WordPress 2.1 Ella and I am impressed. This server was running a much older version of MySql and since Ella requires MySql 4.1 support, I could not upgrade right away. I was somewhat apprehensive of upgrading MySql on Plesk and wanted to put aside some time for the upgrade in case things went south. This morning, I upgraded MySql, this blog, all the plugins and performed some much needed tweaking and maintenance. For those that are on Plesk servers and would like some instructions on how to upgrade MySql safely, this post should help. The upgrade was simple, the instructions made sense and were complete, and the upgrade itself went without a hitch. After the upgrade, I tweaked the query cache (sorely missed in MySql 3), upped the key buffer and the thread cache sizes and optimized all the tables. I am satisfied with the […]

30 WP Themes in 30 Days

30 WP Themes in 30 Days “Small potato” wants to develop 30 new WordPress themes in 30 days and calls it the “Ridiculously Mind-Numbing WordPress Self-Challenge”. It probably would be, considering the rules that he has set for himself and his limitations that he admits to on the post. Something like this has been attempted before by Phu with a lot of success. However, in looking through the existing themes that he has developed and offered for free download to WordPress users, I think he can do it with a little encouragement from all of us. Even if he is not completely successful, he will learn a lot and will provide a lot for the WordPress community (and receive a lot of attention) Thanks to Lorelle for finding the post, who is also blogging for the Blog Herald.

DiggProof your WordPress A close look at optimizing and tweaking your MySql database for WordPress and other tips and plugins to make your WordPress blog faster than it already is. Even though WordPress is fast in its own right, this article is geared for high traffic blogs and especially those that run WordPress on smaller Virtual Private Servers. While we are on the subject of optimizations, the newly released WordPress 2.1 Ella has introduced many code and query optimizations that should make WordPress much faster than it already was. For example, one of the changes introduced to handle future posts gives the database the ability to cache more queries at the MySql level and should reduce load on the database server (however minuscule).

LinkyLoo, WordPress Hack

WP Extension: WP-Manage This extension (or hack) for WordPress allows for backup and upgrade of WordPress from inside its own interface. I am not sure why it was not integrated into the WordPress admin though it does honor the WordPress user profile. It uses special Zip and Mysql backup backup classes from inside PHP and does not require the use or permission of passthu(). As an FYI (since my backup plugin had the vulnerability), the backup files created are still world readable and though the filenames are random, there is an element of risk involved. The upgrade feature, albeit cool, might be a bit dangerous if not coupled with the backup.

Calm: Two column, light blue, simple, minimalist, soothing, left sidebar theme for WordPress with a very unique header image (has a picture of what I assume is a moon jellyfish). Demo here.
