Top 6 Most Prolific Bloggers – 1000 posts or more – looking for the top 100: This can be a slippery slope. I am not so sure that post count really makes for “prolific”ity but this is my post number 2113 on this blog. How many posts do you have? Thanks Darren Speedlinking

HOW-TO, WordPress FAQs

mod_security is a well known web application firewall for Apache that is easy to setup and provides a fair amount of protection from web malware and can even provide some protection from comment spam. The benefits of mod_security have been discussed over and over again and with the recent unforeseen problems with WordPress (In case you have not heard about it, if you have not upgraded your WordPress 2.1.1 installation, you need to do it NOW), mod_security would have provided a level of security if it was installed. Since I had to install mod_security on one of my servers, the steps are fresh in my mind and worth a post. All of the steps below are assuming that you have some sort of a LAMP installation over which you have complete control. If you are on a shared host on LAMP, you will have to ask your provider to install […]

WP Plugin: Feedburner Feed Stats

WordPress Hack, WordPress Plugins

Feedburner Feed Stats is a simple plugin that I put together with the ideas (and some of the code) from an article that I was reading yesterday for a WordPress hack of sorts. The idea is good and the code is simple. Since a lot of people like the subscriber statistics offered by Feedburner but want to continue to offer feeds directly through WordPress, if there was a way to pass on every feed request made to WordPress transparently onto Feedburner, Feedburner would be able to gather subscription data. 45n5 came up with the concept and some of the code for the WordPress hack. I took some of that code, some more code from transparent proxy scripts, added a smattering of more code on suggestions from Eric Lunt along with the plugin framework that was already built by Steve Smith and am ready to alpha test my version of the […]

Why Readers Unsubscribe

34 Reasons Why Readers Unsubscribe from Your Blog: Darren had asked the question, Why do readers unsubscribe from your blog’s feed? and he tabulated the answers in the comments. Much of the answers are unsurprising but the top two reasons are too many posts and too few posts respectively. So the answer there might be to post just enough entries to keep people coming back and just few enough to keep from overwhelming them. I have found proof of that hypothesis in that the daily updates of plugins and themes on weblogtoolscollection.com works best in single consolidated posts. Other important factors included off topic posts, partial feeds and finally good content. I love Scoble’s comment on that post. There is a lot to be said for “do what you love, put stuff up you’d love to read, and the rest will fall into place.”

Build more WordPress blogs. I tend to shy away from “me too” posts but I have to agree with this one. The more you Dive Into WordPress, the better you get at it. Inspired by Zeo who was in turn inspired by Warpspire.

OpenID

OpenID According to Simon Willison, OpenID is a simple piece of infrastructure on which smart applications can be built and the buzz around OpenID is growing. This idea has been batted around for some time but the consolidation of ideas and a working version of the system really gives it some legitimacy. I still wonder what the uptake rate will be. If you are still wondering what OpenID is and what it can do for you, think of it as a decentralized authentication system much like Microsoft Passport but much less monolithic. I can still think of various problems (Tim outlines some of those in his post). However, a good use could be in the WordPress comment moderation system. Since WordPress allows comments from previously authorized commenters, OpenID could be a way to positively identify a “valid” commenter on your blog forever. Of course, if any centralized whitelist type service […]

WordPress, WordPress WishList

This week I received a request for a plugin that would allow upload of files from a WordPress blog without requiring a user login. Ideally the plugin would send an email to the administrator of the blog when a file is uploaded, would allow the user to add some meta to the file being uploaded and the file upload location would be configurable. Some of the functionality already exists in the Secure Files Plugin There has also been a request for a plugin that enables EXIF functionality in WordPress, gathers the information from uploaded files, stuffs the EXIF information in meta for the post and then displays them as custom fields or when you hover over the image. Some of this functionality already exists in photo plugins and modifications but a simple and seamless plugin would be nice. If you would like your need or idea for WordPress functionality to […]

FeedBurner Fatal Flaw

Blogging, Business of Blogging

I love FeedBurner and I have been using their service for quite some time. I love their statistics and though I do not pay for the “Secret HallPass and Handshake” I really benefit from understanding subscription and and click patterns. However, Feedburner and consequently the FeedBurner Feed Replacement plugin suffers from a major flaw that has become quite irritating of late. The feed replacement plugin and Feedburner have very little granularity, a flaw that WordPress does not suffer from. As a matter of fact, WordPress’ feed versatility is one of the best in the industry and though the system is not without its weaknesses, it provides some of the most useful and varied options to distribute feeds. When I use Feedburner, I completely lose that versatility. Unless I can come up with a pain free method of re-instating the versatility (and it does not look good), I feel that the […]

WeblogToolsCollection is now available in Deutsch and in Español. We are planning further feature enhancements such as direct linking from this blog to translated posts and cross posting of news. We will also add a few more languages in the future if these two translations become popular AND readers see a benefit from such translations. The first two languages were chosen based traffic patterns of this blog and past user requests. Since I am quite inept at both these languages, I would appreciate it if a couple of my readers would do me a favor in spreading the word and post the links to these blogs in the respective WordPress Forums along with a small explanation of the purpose. Thanks for your help and please let us know what you think.
