Blogging News, WordPress

This is pretty exciting news and I am very enthusiastic about it. The new WordPress Theme Directory has just been announced. It is available through http://wordpress.org/extend/themes just like the plugin directory and has all the features and infrastructure support of the WordPress Extend umbrella. The look of the plugin area has also been maintained to provide a familiar feel. That being said, there are only a few themes on the new directory. You can upload your themes by just logging into the Theme Directory using your WordPress.org username and password and following the instructions and meeting the requirements on the upload page. The theme upload process is mostly automated except for a manual review. When you upload your theme, you should expect to receive an email (soon after uploading your theme, email reception times may vary) saying that your theme is waiting to be reviewed. If you do not receive […]

How many Queries are too many?

Blogging, General, WordPress

I have been asked this question quite a few times and I never have a perfect answer. It is obviously an important question to ask but it can be answered in many different ways based on preferences, need for plugins, optimization techniques used and a variety of other factors. Weblog Tools Collection uses a lot of plugins and is very query heavy but the in spite of that, the front page uses 59 queries to generate itself. I think the default (on a vanilla WordPress install on the default theme) is 27 or something of that nature. The larger the number of queries, the slower the page is going to load and the more load you are going to put on your MySql server. All of the above is true if you do not use inline or regenerative caching mechanisms. The caveat on this blog is that its plugins and […]

WordPress for iPhone App

WordPress for iPhone: Big news from the Automattic team yesterday. They released a first look at their iPhone App that works on both WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs. The application is Open Source, available from the iPhone App store and will be available for free. The screen real estate problem with the large on screen keyboard looks to be largely solved with this app and it adds the ability to modify previous posts and view your blog on the web. The official iPhone app for WordPress blog is linked above. The application received rave reviews from a variety of sources such as TechCrunch and Webware and ma.tt talked about it yesterday. Check out the screencast when you get a chance. It definitely has a wow factor.

Today is the last day to submit entries to the WordPress Plugin Competition. We will accept entries till 11:59 PM EST tonight. A little leeway will be allowed because of time differences across the world. However we will not accept any entries that come in tomorrow. Please make sure that all entrants are registered on the Plugin Competition Blog and have written at least one post about their plugin entry If you find a bug, please resend your entry. A plugin that crashes and burns in a fatal error on install is quite a downer to your chances at winning the competition. Please send in your entries before the deadline to wpplugincomp [at] wltc [dot] net with the subject line as “WP Plugin Competition: Plugin Name“ There are over $3800 in prizes to be won in this competition Over 40 plugins have been announced so far. We have received a […]

What Plugin Coders Must Know About WordPress 2.6: Just like it sounds, Ozh has started a post, followed by a lively comment thread, on the challenges that can be faced by plugin coders with WordPress 2.6. This might be a good time (WordPress 2.6 Beta 2 is out) to start digging into your plugins to get them to be 2.6 compatible.

Google Trends: weblogtoolscollection.com provides (slightly) interesting facts on your blog. Though the product is free, signing in is required to see the number estimates. Not all sites seem to have a lot of data in Google Trends but it was fun to browse the various links. Most interesting to me were the “also visited” section and the “also searched” section. Matt Cutts had an interesting writeup on Google Trends for websites a little over a week ago.

Kym Huynh is a songwriter and is writing a song about WordPress (just for fun I have been told) and has offered to write a song and record it professionally in a studio for the winner of the WordPress Plugin Competition! What an amazing prize! I love it when WordPress Samaritans offer their thanks in their own way. It has been added to the growing list of prizes for the competition. Thank you Kym! For those that have not noticed, we have eleven plugins entered/announced for the plugin competition already, with many more in the works. Have you signed up yet?
