Over the weekend, I caught a glimpse of what was supposedly a new design for the WordPress Themes Repository. As was explained by Steven Hodson, the screen shots were taken from his browser when he visited the theme repository. The screen shots showcase a carousel view for browsing through themes, icons for navigating and downloading themes, a single page view which displays detailed information regarding the theme ect. No matter how hard I and many others tried, we couldn’t get the theme repository to display in the same way that it did for Steve. Lloyd Budd stopped by my blog post and left this as the comment: Hi Jeff, those screen shots are fake. I’m 100% certain. This past week of WordPress 2.5 developments saw the addition of changeable color schemes to the 2.5 admin interface. Ryan started us off by announcing that WordPress 2.5 will feature two different color schemes. One color scheme will be called Classic while the other will be Fresh. Fresh will feature the newly redesigned color scheme while Classic will contain darker shades of blue and gray. Now, the only decision is whether to have Classic or Fresh be the default color scheme. So far, it looks like Fresh is winning the race. If that were not enough, I asked Ryan if this would allow end users to upload style sheets that are created by members of the community into the back end which could then be selected to change the color scheme. [Continue Reading...]The guys and gals at Automattic have published their Google Summer Of Code 2008 Codex Article which highlights various mentors and ideas. For those of you who don’t know what the Google Summer Of Code Project is all about, here is a brief intro. Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a program that offers student developers stipends to write code for various open source projects. Google will be working with a several open source, free software, and technology-related groups to identify and fund several projects over a three month period. Historically, the program has brought together over 1,500 students with over 130 open source projects to create millions of lines of code. The program, which kicked off in 2005, is now in its fourth year. [Continue Reading...]With WordPress 2.5 due to be released today (Hooray!) now would be a good time to go through a series of upgrade checks to see if your blog is ready for 2.5. Lorelle Van Fossen has written up an excellent article on the BlogHerald in regards to the pre upgrade checks you should perform. These include disabling and or removing old plugins, updating themes and plugins, validation, and checking for compatibilities. Going through this series of pre-flight checks as some would say, will help you prepare for a smooth upgrade process. I know I’ll be one of the first to upgrade my blog when I have the chance. When will you upgrade yours? *Note* WordPress 2.5 was TENTATIVELY scheduled to be release on March 10th, 2008. However, it looks like it’s not ready for production treatment and thus, has not been released.

A number of individuals contributed to the article such as myself, Brian Gardner, Justin Tadlock, Cal Coleman and more. The basis of the article was to try and get a glimpse as to what the future of WordPress themes might be. What better way to find out than to ask those that set the tone for WordPress themes in their current state. [Continue Reading...]Jeremy Clarke mentioned to me about a way to search the Codex, WordPress support area and the plugin repository all from within FireFox. If you support users as I do in the WordPress IRC chat room, there are a lot of times where I do a search on the Codex to look up the page for a certain function that someone is inquiring about. Thanks to Jeremy’s tip, I no longer have to visit the actual page to perform a search. If you visit the MyCroft page on Mozdev.org you’ll notice a number of links that you can click on. Each one of these links are a search engine plugin that was coded for FireFox. What this means is that, you can add WordPress specific search engines to the search engine tool bar within FireFox which is usually occupied by Google by default. [Continue Reading...]WPThemerKit.com is a new way to create WordPress themes. The system works similarly to the way cssZenGarden works in that, you have an HTML file and a CSS file. Once you are finished with the design, you copy the CSS file along with the images folder to the corresponding WordPress blank theme and all of a sudden, you have a full blown WordPress Theme.
