Our recent post on WordPress 3.2’s plans generated some interesting discussion, with the bulk of it centered around the discontinuation of support for Internet Explorer 6 in the Dashboard. Internet Explorer 6, now almost ten years old, was once a power house in its own right. Now, the browser is drowning under its poor support for web standards, a pool of modern web technologies that it can never support, and a flood of hacks that many sites need to employ just to provide a decent browsing experience for IE 6 users. IE 6 was superseded by Internet Explorer 7 in 2006, followed by IE 8 in 2009, and recently IE 9 last week. Of course, alternatives to Internet Explorer, like Firefox, have been around much longer. According to Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer 6 Countdown, 12% of the world still uses the ten-year old browser. The highest concentration of IE 6 users […]

Microsoft recently released a public beta of their newest web browser, IE9, that has quickly become very popular.  In its first 48 hours of availability it was  downloaded 2 million times. You know what that means – more users are visiting your WordPress site using IE9 everyday. The public beta of Internet Explorer 9 launched just a few days ago, and WordPress.com has already launched support for IE9’s new pinning feature. WordPress.com users can now pin their blog to their Windows taskbar, allowing them to immediately launch the blog from the taskbar and write a post, moderate comments, and view stats from a contextual menu. Self-installed WordPress users can also join the pin party with the new Internet Explorer Site Pinning plugin. The plugin is only two days old, so it’s not as fully featured as WordPress.com’s implementation, but more features are on the way. The one Windows PC that I do own will forever remain on Windows XP, so I won’t be able to take part in the IE9 festivities, but I’d love to hear your take on IE9. Should we shudder and be fearful, or should we cheer and be joyful?

Business of Blogging, WordPress

So on the day of the release of the much [add verb of choice here] Internet Explorer 8, we would like to know what happens to your WordPress blog in IE 8. Does anything look different? Does anything work? How about the Dashboard or the admin interface? Did you find any problems? Are you tearing your hair out or are you grinning from ear to ear? Would you suggest that everyone upgrade or would you suggest that we stay away? This is one of those times that I wish we allowed the posting of screenshots along with the comments on this blog but links to screenshots would be much appreciated. Anyone know of a plugin that allows posting of screenshots in comments?
