[Continue Reading...]WordCamp San Francisco was a total hoot! I met up with a bunch of old friends, made a few new ones, had some good food, drank a few brews, hung out with a whole lot of cool people and all the while, I was surrounded by WordPress goodness. Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers and participants! A few bits of interesting statistics and news from WordCamp San Francisco “State of the Word”: WordPress.org downloads were nearly twice as many as last year There are twice as many WordPress.org blogs on the web this as compared to last year Akismet caught just as many spam comments this year as last (count grew very little) There is a Blackberry version of the WordPress management app coming soon, iPhone version will see an upgrade There will be a GPL paid themes page on the WordPress Extend to encourage the business model At some point in the future, […]
[Continue Reading...]I receive questions about WordPress from various sources and I love answering them. I serve on the technical advisory board for our local University and recently ran into one of the other board members who had been using WordPress for some time. He wanted his WordPress site to do a few things that he could not get to work and his email to me ended with “I think I have hit the end of WordPress’ capabilities.” I respectfully disagreed and proceeded to give him links to solutions that I had found. He found them really useful and is going to use them in his re-design. This perception of “reaching the end of WordPress” is somewhat common. At a recent WordCamp, I had the distinct feeling (after talking with a bunch of the attendees and from feedback) that they were looking for cool things to do with their WordPress blog to […]
[Continue Reading...]As many of you know – plugins can add significant functionality to your website. For instance there is a plugin that will add an entire forum to your site (Simple:Press) and there is another one that will allow your visitors to contact you via a customizable form (Contact Form 7). What if you were just looking for a few plugins to fancy up your site a little bit or maybe add a small piece of functionality or info? Well they exist as well and sometimes it is the simple touches that really finish a site off. Here are a few of my favorites: - Shockingly Simple Favicon changes your sites favicon – that is the small graphic that shows up in the address bar of your web browser when your on a site. This even sticks when you switch themes after installing it. - Simple Feed Copyright inserts a copyright […]

[Continue Reading...]Jane Wells recently put the call out to the WordPress Professionals mailing list asking for recommendations for Women WordPress developers. That is, those who develop plugins or patches for WordPress, not bloggers. Personally, when I think of women involved with WordPress, I think of Lorelle VanFossen, Lisa Sabin Wilson, and a few others. Other than Lisa who develops themes, I can’t think of any women off the top of my head that contributes routinely to the development of WordPress or plugins. If you are a female WordPress developer and you live on the West Coast, preferably around San Francisco, CA get in contact with Jane Wells as soon as possible. You may end up with the opportunity to present at WordCamp San Francisco.

[Continue Reading...]The other day, I was thinking about how easy it is to make a mess on the web. For example, purchasing a domain that you attach an email address to that is used for a year only to end up wanting to use a different domain. This means you have to go to every site you registered an account with and change the email address if you plan on letting the old domain retire. There are also a host of other issues as well which in the end, just seems like a giant mess. For this reason alone, I believe hosted blogging solutions will always have a market because you don’t have to worry about moving around or managing a domain. Typically, all you have to do is register an account and blog. However, users of WordPress.com have an awesome benefit that not many other blog hosting providers can match […]
