Best of WordPress, WordPress

The year is quickly coming to a close, and it’s time to look back and reflect on the year that we have so commonly referred to as 2010. We’ve already shared part 1 of our highlights from 2010, but what about you? What is your most memorable WordPress-related highlight from the year 2010? This could be anything from the first 3.1 release candidate to that time when you spent all night fixing your friend’s blog. To start the ball rolling, I’d have to say that the hiring of Andrew Nacin as a full-time developer certainly stands out as my favorite WordPress moment of 2010. So, what’s yours?

WordPress 3.0.4 has been released to plug a critical security vulnerability. [It] fixes a core security bug in our HTML sanitation library, called KSES. I would rate this release as “critical.” I realize an update during the holidays is no fun, but this one is worth putting down the eggnog for. In the spirit of the holidays, consider helping your friends as well. If you’re currently testing WordPress 3.1, make sure that you upgrade to the latest nightly release to get the same security fixes.

The talented team behind WordPress.com has launched a major update to their built-in contact forms. The old built-in contact form system was in need of a major overhaul, and that’s exactly what it got in this update.  The new forms are not just contact forms, but fully customizable forms with the ability to add or remove fields, select from a variety of field types, and mark specific fields as required. The team also added a new “Feedbacks” section to the Dashboard, which is basically similar to the Comment management section, but specifically for managing the data collected by your new forms. As with comments, all form data is passed through Akismet to keep the spam bots from abusing your forms. Of course, the new custom form system isn’t just for WordPress.com users.  Users with self-hosted/installed WordPress blogs can enjoy the new system by installing and activating the Grunion Contact Form […]

The talented folks at WordPress.com have just launched their official Theme Showcase! Previously, the only way to browse through the over a hundred available themes at WordPress.com was to open a free blog and start looking through the Appearance section of the Dashboard.  Now, current users and potential users are treated to an in-depth theme showcase featuring large screenshots, specifications, recommended uses, and examples of other WordPress.com blogs pushing the limits of the themes. Though the showcase is specific to WordPress.com, most of the listed themes can be found for self-hosted WordPress blogs in the official Theme Directory. What do you think of the new Theme Showcase?

WordPress, WordPress FAQs

With theme malware on the rise, many users are left wondering where the safest place to find free WordPress themes is, or how to protect themselves from potentially dangerous themes. Without a doubt, the best place to find free WordPress themes is the official WordPress Theme Directory. Themes can be submitted to the directory by almost any author, but the themes are thoroughly checked for quality and safety by a team of dedicated volunteers. With over 1,200 free themes and a handy tag filter interface, you’d have a hard time not finding the perfect theme for your blog. There are certainly other places to find free themes, like Theme Lab, but how can you be sure that the theme you downloaded is safe? If you plan to download themes from anywhere but the official WordPress Theme Directory, you should install both the Exploit Scanner and Theme-Check plugins. Run the Exploit […]
