Back in August, I asked the following question: Why Is Gravatar Still Not Mainstream?. You folks supplied a wealth of answers to the question but many of the answers suggested something along the lines of making it easier to obtain a Gravatar through registration if they didn’t have one. While I’ve yet to see news on such an integration, there is a plugin that has been developed by Milan Dinic called Gravatar Signup Encouragement which enables you to encourage Gravatar registration to anyone who is not a registered member on your WordPress powered site. Outside of the WordPress.org theme repository and the GPL commercial theme vendors, there are few spots where you can download a variety of themes which do not contain some sort of sponsorship or encrypted code. One site still cranking out great, quality free themes is Themelab run by Leland. However, in most of the theme release posts that are published on WeblogToolsCollection.com, the theme has to be downloaded from the authors website. We do not install and test every theme mentioned in these release posts. However, if you are worried about downloading a theme that contains malicious code or obfuscated code, this somewhat new tool called Theme Authenticity Checker may help you out. The Theme Authenticity Checker is a plugin that scans all of the files for all installed themes looking for links, malicious code, etc. Not all obfuscated code is bad but generally, it is not placed in a […]

Inject Plugin Ideas Here ->

As a plugin developer I find the hardest part of the process to be coming up with new ideas that I can turn into a plugin. Sure, there are tons of places out there that list lots of ideas but, I’ve found that it’s hard to find a good idea that will actually make a useful plugin which will appeal to a large audience. Most ideas that are out there floating around are very specific and some would only be useful to only a very select few. I’ve been searching non-stop for the better part of a month now and have yet to come across an idea that would actually be very useful and also feasible. I want something that I can complete in a decent amount of time and would also leave room for lots of improvement. So, today I’m here to ask you, the user, what you want. […]

WordPress Plugins

At last check, there were 6,769 plugins available on the repository. Many of these plugins overlap each other providing similar or the same exact functionality. Over the past few months, I’ve heard developers tell me about particular plugins which were gaining in popularity in the repository were nothing more than ripoffs of their own creation. But, plugins on the repository are filed under the GPL meaning modifying and redistribution of code is completely valid. To make matters worse, many of the plugins that make use of another plugins code do not contain any form of credit acknowledging the plugin author or where the code came from. I know this because I’ve taken a look at the source code of some of the plugins in question and if you didn’t know any better, they wrote the entire thing themselves. While I could ask the same questions regarding themes, I would like […]
