As before, this is not yet meant for live sites, but please do take a few swings at it on a test installation, especially if you are a plugin or theme developer. WordPress 3.4 Beta 1 has been released. As always, this is still in development and not meant for use on live sites, but the team is planning for a final release in May if all goes as planned. This beta includes a few notable additions over the current stable release, including a new theme customizer and previewer, the ability to select header and background images from the library, support for flexible custom header image sizes, and a much improved theme browser with the ability to install child themes from the official directory. This is not yet meant for live sites, but please do take a few swings at it on a test installation. If you find any bugs, please report them, and contact the support forums if you need any help.

WordPress, WordPress News, WordPress Plugins

If you’re a WordPress plugin developer, you may have received an email from an address other than WordPress.org notifying you that your plugin had been removed. These emails are fake and designed to gather your login information for unknown nefarious reasons. Emails from the WordPress.org Plugin Repository are always sent from a WordPress.org email address, so if you receive an email from elsewhere claiming official WordPress.org Plugin Repository business, delete it immediately. If you have already fallen victim to this phishing attack, you should change your passwords as soon as possible.

Twenty Twelve, the next great WordPress default theme, has unfortunately been removed from the 3.4 development cycle and pushed back to 3.5. There is no specific reason given for the change, but it seems likely that the team would rather focus on the core functions as WordPress 3.4 draws closer to its inevitable April release. If you already have Twenty Twelve activated and are using trunk, make sure that you activate another theme before upgrading to the latest, as Twenty Twelve will be removed. If you want to continue to use Twenty Twelve, you can grab it from GitHub for now.

After several years of success with Google Summer of Code, WordPress was not accepted as a mentoring organization for 2012. The reasons for this are not clear, and at this point it’s not worth speculating until the WordPress team hears back from Google during an upcoming feedback meeting. Despite this momentary hitch in their plans, the core WordPress developers are not throwing out the idea of a developing version 3.5 as a mentorship-focussed release without Google’s backing. We’ll have more news on this as it becomes available.

We had previously mentioned the first printing of WPCandy Quarterly, a WordPress related quarterly print magazine from the folks at WPCandy, and now it looks like the first issue has begun shipping to folks who had pre-ordered it. This is quite possibly the first ever printed WordPress publication, at least I can’t find any others, so this is a rather monumental occasion. It sounds like there are plenty left after pre-orders, so you should still be able to order one if you missed out. The images in the shipment announcement post look great, so if you have received your copy, we’d love to hear what you think. Update: To clarify, I meant that this is quite possibly the first ever printed WordPress magazine publication.

WPCandy Quarterly, a WordPress related quarterly print magazine from the folks at WPCandy, is just about to be mailed out to the lucky readers who either pre-ordered or subscribed. To my knowledge, or at least about half an hour of searching, this may very well be the first ever printed WordPress magazine publication. The first issue will feature articles from 11 well-known contributors, and due to demand from the pre-orders, 2,000 copies are making their way through the printers as you read this. A lot of thought went into the design of this magazine, and you can see a video blazing through the various drafts below. It’s not too late to reserve your copy, so if you want to be a part of this historical launch, you should place your order soon before they’re shipped.

Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of WordPress, turned 28 two weeks ago. It’s been a busy year for Matt. Three major WordPress versions were released, he switched back to using a Mac after 8 years on Windows, and he travelled 190,000 miles over 245 days. Even though two weeks have gone by, it’s not too late to say “happy birthday” to Matt. In fact, he would prefer to receive all of his birthday gifts this year in the form of donations to Charity: Water through his birthday campaign. Matt has set an ambitious goal to reach $28,000 in donations by April, but if that goal is reached, his “birthday presents” will have provided clean water for 280 families in developing countries. Not everyone can head to the nearest faucet for a clean glass of water, so say “happy birthday” to Matt and help someone else enjoy some clean water today!

iThemes has now added a huge student discount to their popular Web Designer’s Toolkit. The new Student Edition offers full-time students in the US and Canada access to over 150 themes, over 20 plugins, and over 300 hours of training for only $97 ($880 less than the original). Folks with a strong memory may notice the similarity to iThemes’s Educator Program. While the Student Edition of the toolkit is not free, the $880 discount is something that can’t be beat, especially if you’re busy spending money on your tuition. If you have plans to launch a WordPress-focused career in design, consulting, maintenance, and other such things, this is a great way to get a head start.
