The talented folks at WordPress.com have just launched their official Theme Showcase! Previously, the only way to browse through the over a hundred available themes at WordPress.com was to open a free blog and start looking through the Appearance section of the Dashboard.  Now, current users and potential users are treated to an in-depth theme showcase featuring large screenshots, specifications, recommended uses, and examples of other WordPress.com blogs pushing the limits of the themes. Though the showcase is specific to WordPress.com, most of the listed themes can be found for self-hosted WordPress blogs in the official Theme Directory. What do you think of the new Theme Showcase?

There is some good news for all of the Windows Phone 7 / WordPress users out there, Windows Phone 7 now has a WordPress application available. In the first version of the application, you can edit posts and pages, upload photos, check stats, and last but not least, moderate comments. At some point in the future, the ability to upload videos will be added to the application. The new website WindowsPhone.wordpress.org is where you’ll find all the latest news on development along with user forums for support. The front page of the website also has a slider on the right hand side that provides a visual indication of what it’s like to use the app. Based on the slider presentation, everything regarding the app appears to be about simplicity, like the phone platform itself. The application is open-source meaning you can contribute to the code to help improve the product. […]

It seems like just last month when we were celebrating Andrew Nacin’s first full year of WordPress contributions.  Like any good athlete with a solid year under his belt, Andrew Nacin has just been acquired, by Matt Mullenweg himself. Nacin now has his dream job. He will be working alongside Otto Wood as a Tech Ninja at Mullenweg’s Audrey Capital. His job? To continue his work as a WordPress core developer on a full-time basis and also contribute to the WordPress.org site, bbPress, BuddyPress, and GlotPress. Nacin has certainly made an impact during his rise through the WordPress community, and we wish him the best in his new adventure.  The future of WordPress certainly feels more secure than ever before.

WordPress 3.0.2, the first mandatory security update in quite a while, was released not too long ago. The update patched an exploit which allowed an Author-level users to gain access to the site well above their user level, but the real story here is the overall efficiency of the volunteer developers. With a team unpaid volunteers keeping WordPress in tip-top shape, you might be surprised to hear that this particular update went from initial disclosure of the exploit to final release in no more than four hours! That particular time frame is almost unheard of, even amongst commercial projects. To further sweeten the pot, the VaultPress team automatically pushed a hotfix the next day to all VaultPress-enabled blogs, ensuring that all VaultPress users were protected from the exploit, even if they had not had a chance to apply the 3.0.2 update. With such an efficient team of volunteer developers, and […]

It has only been two months since Microsoft announced their intention to shut down their popular Windows Live Spaces blogging platform and offered an easy migration route to WordPress.com.  Since then, WordPress.com has seen a marked increase in signups, and not all of them are coming from Windows Live Spaces. Before the Windows Live Spaces migration was announced, WordPress.com held steady at about 400,000 signups per month.  This number has now more than doubled to about 900,000 per month.  With such a steep increase in signups and several new features, WordPress.com is on track to end the year with a bang. Upgrading from Windows Live Spaces is a simple four-step process.  Of course, this is a rather large-scale migration, and there have been plenty of questions along the way.  Some of the more frequently asked questions have been answered in this support document, and a few were covered in more […]
