Thanks to posts here on WLTC and around the blogosphere, the topic of “sponsored themes” is at the top of everyone’s minds. I thought this would be a good time to share my thoughts on the ramifications of sponsored themes, and what it means for our community. For those who are new to the topic, in the past yew years a market has developed around advertisers that pay money to websites to have plain-text links back to their properties so they can rank better in search engines like Google for the text in those links. At some point the people gaming Google realized instead of buying links from dozens of individual sites, they could pay theme authors to bundle their links with their download and get hundreds or thousands of sites with their link for a small fraction of the cost. Performancing Metrics After having tried Google Analytics for a while (and having removed them) I have installed the newly released Performancing Metrics to give it a quick try. Check out some of the new features including (possibly) cool bitsof information such as Adsense clicks. The presentation seems a lot more lucid and easy to access/understand than Google, but then again, my account has no data so far. Expect a review soon. PS: For all those scratching your heads … The stats update hourly, so give it a couple of hours and then check again.

Blog advertising is a prickly slope. I have dabbled in this poison for almost as long as I have blogged. Most of my adventures have been less than satisfactory and I have made just enough money to help me host my blogs and services. I recently decided to give Text-Link-Ads a try. I really like it so far. This mode of advertising works much better than contextual advertising for sites such as mine. Text-Link-Ads are easy to setup and their customer service is excellent. There have been some bugs and discrepancies while they upgraded their systems and changed things around but these have always been resolved to my satisfaction without my interference.
