WordPress 2.8 Baker is now available as a full release. 2.8 has a whole bunch of bug fixes, has improvements to themes and widgets and has added some fantastic taxonomy features. The WordPress dev blog post linked above goes into detail about what is new. Users are now able to browse the WordPress theme directory and add themes with one click. 2.8 should also be faster to use overall. I don’t see my upgrade bar yet but since the final version bump just went in,  the upgrade notice should be there soon. You can read a review of WordPress 2.8 we did earlier. If you already know about and were eager to upgrade, you can download WordPress 2.8 or use the automatic upgrade option to upgrade to it.

WordCamp San Francisco was a total hoot! I met up with a bunch of old friends, made a few new ones, had some good food, drank a few brews, hung out with a whole lot of cool people and all the while, I was surrounded by WordPress goodness. Thank you to all the organizers, volunteers and participants! A few bits of interesting statistics and news from WordCamp San Francisco “State of the Word”: WordPress.org downloads were nearly twice as many as last year There are twice as many WordPress.org blogs on the web this as compared to last year Akismet caught just as many spam comments this year as last (count grew very little) There is a Blackberry version of the WordPress management app coming soon, iPhone version will see an upgrade There will be a GPL paid themes page on the WordPress Extend to encourage the business model At some point in the future, […]

Blogging News, brainstorming, WordPress

I receive questions about WordPress from various sources and I love answering them. I serve on the technical advisory board for our local University and recently ran into one of the other board members who had been using WordPress for some time. He wanted his WordPress site to do a few things that he could not get to work and his email to me ended with “I think I have hit the end of WordPress’ capabilities.” I respectfully disagreed and proceeded to give him links to solutions that I had found. He found them really useful and is going to use them in his re-design. This perception of “reaching the end of WordPress” is somewhat common. At a recent WordCamp, I had the distinct feeling (after talking with a bunch of the attendees and from feedback) that they were looking for cool things to do with their WordPress blog to […]

WordPress 2.8 Beta 1 has been released. For all those of you that are adventurous, this is your cue. Codex lists all the changes in 2.8 that have been implemented before the feature freeze. A “Get ready for WordCamp San Francisco 2009” post from Lloyd. I almost completely forgot about the WordPress’ Sixth Anniversary celebrations. 572 attendees as of this post! WordCamp Columbus was great with some spirited feedback! Looking forward to WordCamp Chicago.

I am going to be at WordCamp Columbus today. If you are going to be attending the event, be sure to say hi. The list of speakers is quite attractive. Jeff and I were discussing WordCamp Columbus, planning out the event and scoping out presentations that we would listen to and as usual, it was quite overwhelming. I am looking forward to meeting up with old friends and making some new ones while I am there. I like to make my own mini conference in the halls, so if you see a big Indian guy huddled over with a bunch of others people discussing WordPress, you will know that you have run into me. 🙂 I am looking for a few others folks to hang out with and have dinner at the end of the event. So if you are interested, please let me know. See you there!

Weblog Tools Collection is now available for subscription on the Kindle. There is a 14 day free trial if you would like to just try it out. So if you are a Kindle owner and a WLTC fan, please subscribe and let us know what you think. While I wish we could offer it for free, the charge is $1.99 (we get 30% of this amount). If you want to publish your blog on Kindle, you can do it too! Be sure to let us know what you think of the experience if you choose to publish your blog on the Kindle. The Kindle forums are a little sparse at this time and the whole publishing page/venue is in beta so you might have some trouble. It was a breeze for us. Thanks to BloggingPro for the idea.
