Automattic Acquires PollDaddy.: From their recent bi-yearly assembly of Automattic folks, this time at Breckenridge Colorado, Matt announced that the PollDaddy service is the most recent member of the Automattic family and WordPress.com users will now be able to add polls to their WordPress blogs. He also said that the team is working on many features and customizations of polls to make the polls have the same look and feel as the blogs. There is a WordPress.org plugin for PollDaddy and Matt posts about the PollDaddy acquisition on his blog. From the sound of things, a few cool projects might be announced and introduced in the few weeks following this Automattic meeting.

Revolution Theme Going Open Source: Brian Gardner’s Revolution Theme for WordPress is going 100% Open Source. All the themes that are currently on Brian’s Revolution site will no longer be available as or October 31st and will be replaced with a set of new themes that will be developed and released under the GPL. The original Revolution themes will continue to be supported for those who have purchased them in the past. The new GPL themes will also be sold in packages that include support, access to customizations, tutorials and other items. Brian explains his decision in the linked post, talks about his plans for the future of Revolution and explains why he chose to remove the original Revolution themes from his site. Matt Mullenweg #14 most influential on the web – BusinessWeek.: According to BusinessWeek, Matt Mullenweg is one of the 25 most influential people on the web. He shares the accolade with the likes of Steve Ballmer, Steve jobs, Joi Ito and Jon Stewart. At first I thought that this was a ranking much like the 50 most important people of the web from PC World but this appears to be more of a collection. Matt is labelled as “The Publisher” and WordPress as “the blogging service that most serious bloggers turn to”. The associated article is more about how the web is magnifying the influence of jon Stewart and others like him in engaging the American Public in online discourse about the political campaigns. For those that are on WordPress.com, Matt and the Automattic team introduced their new Ad-Free version of WordPress.com for a modest fee of 30 credits per year or $0.08 per day. Matt explains the reasoning behind the existence of the ads on WordPress.com and Lorelle writes up us a nice tutorial on how to activate this feature and some information on the ads themselves. In other cool WordPress news, the WordPress for iPhone app has been downloaded over 100,000 times! Ranaan, who I met for the first time in SF this year and is BBQ averse :), provides a breakdown of the downloads across countries and then runs down a list of new features that are being worked on for version 1.2 including landscape mode, comment moderation and enhanced image options.

WordPress Developers’ Toolbox: Smashing Magazine has put together a quite large list of various tips, tricks, tutorials, documentation, resources, themes, design help and everything else in between for WordPress. As a matter of fact, I am surprised that it was not released as an “eBook”. I do wish that the data was organized better, with better linking within the article, better headings, smaller and fewer pictures and a better way to navigate. But the collection is quite large and there is lots of information there to browse through.

Automattic Has Acquired IntenseDebate
Automattic Has Acquired IntenseDebate’s Enhanced Comment System: Automattic has acquired IntenseDebate for an undisclosed amount according to TechCrunch and this post on the IntenseDate blog. They are planning to delve into a closed beta once again while they ramp up their hardware for an onslaught of new users from Automattic. Plans include a tight integeration with WordPress (I am assuming with WordPress.com initially and maybe as a plugin for WordPress.org, thus the need for ramping up resources) but will continue to exist as a separate service and will be available for other platforms beside WordPress. Expect more news on this front very soon. Matt and Toni also talk about the acquisition.
