Writely – The Web Word Processor

Writely – The Web Word Processor: Though this app is trying to find a niche, I find little use for it outside of the corporate arena (reminds me of Exchange Public Folders on steroids). However, the remotely hosted nature might deter those corporate souls. This app will let you create/edit your word processing documents online while sharing it with a bunch of people. Neat features include simultaneous editing, MS Word/Open Office integeration, RSS feeds for public documents etc. The service is free.

Blogging News, LinkyLoo

Ask Lifehacker Reader: Best blogging webapps? My favorites include del.icio.us for remaindered links, Flickr for posting photos, and WordPress for posting overall. (The software that makes posting to Lifehacker feel like I’m sticking hot pins in my eyes, MovableType? Not so much.) 😛 What webapps would you nominate for the bloggies? I am interested in fringe apps that have not received much press.

Personal Learning Environment based on WPMU how WordPress (and more specifically WPMU) could form the basis of the next generation of Learning Management Systems as Personal Learning Environments. This has been a vision of mine for a long time and I had tried to incorporate this at the University of Toledo while I was there (managed halfway, Dr Ledgard still (re)uses some of my old piecemeal code). WPMU could easily become an extremely powerful learning tool, especially for exploratory courses that depend on the curiosity of the student to encourage innovation and learning.

JSCalc: Very cool javascript on demand calculator experiment. This would also be cool as a dictionary/thesaurus implementation.

Cool Scripts

Find Music You’ll Love – Pandora: If online music is your thing, I recently came upon the Music Genome Project and now Pandora. Tell them the name of a band that you like to listen to and listen to the streaming channel instantly created for you from their library. You can mark a song as a “like or dislike”, buy it for iTunes, from Amazon etc. A bunch of other features for Music lovers. I am quite impressed with the interface, with the features and the fact that it is still free, streams high quality music and still has no ads on their site. As usual, their blog gives a human face to the product. Very cool code! Now why can’t Y! Unlimited come up with something similar that can be accessed with little hassle? (I know they have something close to it, but nothing even remotely similar in usability).

WP Theme: Hemingway Two column, light on dark, optimized and very cool theme for WordPress. As seen on this screenshot the original theme was for Typo and ported over to WordPress. I like the simplicity, the positioning of the items on the page and I really like the neat and clean look.

FlashVlog: Instant Video content on your blog

FlashVlog: Instant Video content on your blog Hot in the heels of the flsdh MP3 player plugin for WordPress, try out FlashVlog. Lots and lots of Flash. With a web cam and computer you can create video blogs almost instantly! You can record and edit streaming video that is available to a web audience within seconds. FlashVlogs are recorded and edited in the FlashVlog Editor and the results are watched using a separate FlashVlog Viewer. Both applets simply run in a standard web page using the popular free Macromedia Flash plug-in.

LinkyLoo, WordPress Plugins

WP plugin: Flash MP3 player I cannot point directly to the post, but [EDIT] Link fixed. (T)his plugin makes any mp3 links (in post or page or any other location in your blog) playable directly on your webpage. In addition, your visitors will have the opportunity to easily tag and post the mp3 link to del.icio.us. This script is extremely lightweight, as is the flash movie that plays on demand. Must-have for podcasters or anyone who wants to allow blog visitors to play mp3 files on the website itself.
