WordPress plugin developers keep releasing updates to plugins. Once a plugin has been updated, you will see an update notice in WordPress, however should you update all the plugins that have updates?

Are you a WordPress plugin developer? Have you looked into the WordPress Plugin Competition? Are you signed up on the Plugin Competition blog to publish your plugin and enter the competition? We have 18 plugins announced so far for the competition, with at least five posts in draft stage (so at least five other plugins waiting to be posted). For the past few days many of you may have been seeing connectivity issues with Akismet. The Akismet team was related to a timing bug in the code, however that has now been fixed and a new version of Akismet has been released. The problem was a bug in the plugin’s diagnostic code that caused it to falsely report problems in some circumstances, even though everything was working correctly. Upgrading to Akismet 2.2.5 will solve the connectivity reporting issues you may have been seeing.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend. Many of the plugin authors I have spoken with throughout the community tell me that very rarely do they ever get a donation let alone a Thank You for releasing their work to the public. Based on the plugin authors feedback, end users demand more features, demand better support, and in the end, have this feeling of entitlement even if the plugin is available without a price tag. The reality is, that for a freely available plugin, you’re not entitled to anything. I don’t know about you, but I certainly would not like to be part of a community that is known as thankless. WordPress 2.8.1 is now available for download or upgrade according to the WordPress Development Blog. This release includes a bunch of bug fixes and security updates, including an important one that affects a few plugins (details here). The update highlights are listed on the dev blog post and all the changes since 2.8 are on the Trac. I don’t see the upgrade bar on this blog yet, but it should be soon. Since 2.8.1 is now released, I wish Dev4Press would redo their benchmarks.
