The anatomy of a WordPress theme

The anatomy of a WordPress theme: Joost de Valk from Yoast has posted a fantastic infographic (a very tall and descriptive image) of all the details on how a WordPress theme works. Very interesting for new theme developers, and a good frame of reference for WordPress DIYers looking to find a quick solution to a theme issue.

Official WordPress Commercial Theme Directory is live

The Official WordPress Commercial Theme Directory is now open. It is linked off the WordPress Extend and is part of the parent theme directory set of links. It is not as much a directory as it is a listing of sites that offer commercial GPL themes. It lists the philosophies, a few words about the business models and the need for the encouragement, a list of screenshots and links to the various theme sites and then a list of criterion for inclusion into this site. I like the succinct explanation of the purpose and the listing criterion seem simple and straightforward to follow. Send your information to themes at wordpress dot org to get included in the list. From the site, if you want to be included: Distribute 100% GPL themes, including artwork and CSS. Have professional support options, and optionally customization. Your site should be complete, well-designed, up to […]

Blogging News, General

It has been a week since we put this new design into production at Weblog Tools Collection. Though at first it was quite a change, the design is growing on me. A few things are still broken (find any?) and the internal code and the SQL queries that run the plugins are still being tweaked. We might end up re-writing a few of the plugins to make them more efficient and introduce caching. Our overall goal was to make the blog feel fresh and be able to highlight the various aspects of our community that helps generate and produce and news and the articles for this blog. Needless to say, we stuck to our basic tenets of minimal advertising and ease of use while sticking with a light (on the eyes and on the bandwidth) and minimalist theme. If you only read this blog in a news reader, I welcome […]

Are your theme’s comments WordPress 2.7 compatible?

Making your theme’s comments compatible with WordPress 2.7 and earlier versions.: If you are a theme designer or author, you need to know that your legacy theme’s comments page will not be compatible with WordPress 2.7 Justin Tadlock has written up a simple (and clean) procedure to make the comments page compatible with WordPress 2.7 and still be backwards compatible with slightly older version of WordPress. While we are on the subject of comments and WordPress 2.7, Otto has also written a detailed post on the new comment enhancements in WordPress 2.7. Judging from the comments and reading through the article, it is a very well written peice and should answer most questions on the new features. [EDIT] As astutely pointed out in the comments, all themes should continue to work fine with original functionality. However to use the newly introduced commenting features of WordPress 2.7, older themes will have […]

WordPress Developers’ Toolbox

WordPress Developers’ Toolbox: Smashing Magazine has put together a quite large list of various tips, tricks, tutorials, documentation, resources, themes, design help and everything else in between for WordPress. As a matter of fact, I am surprised that it was not released as an “eBook”. I do wish that the data was organized better, with better linking within the article, better headings, smaller and fewer pictures and a better way to navigate. But the collection is quite large and there is lots of information there to browse through.

Farms 100 Big Ones Theme Pack

Farms 100 Big Ones Theme Pack: Download this 100 WordPress themes zip file (17MB) and upload them to your blog to have 100 themes to play around with. Many of these themes are older but they are all widgetized, have a bunch of bug fixes, are internationalized, work on both WordPress and WordPress Mu and they have been time tested on Edublogs. I normally would not suggest that users download themes from sources other than the original theme authors’ site, but this is offered from a trusted source and the convenience of a single zip file added to the additional testing and bug fixing performed by Edublogs, is the icing on the cake. [EDIT] James provided a preview of all 100 themes here.
