FTC says bloggers must disclose payments and freebies when reviewing products or risk being fined $16,000: This morning, the Federal Trade Commission published their Final Guides Governing Endorsements, Testimonials with changes that affect testimonial advertising, bloggers and celebrity endorsements. Though these are guidelines and not regulations, bloggers could face civil fines up to $16,000 and advertisers could also face fines. Interesting to note is that there are no guidelines on how to disclose relationships and this has no effect on blogs, corporations and relationships outside of the US. The new rules would apply to any transfer of value in exchange for publicity but seems very watered down in its execution. TechMeme is full of reverberations, but is there a lot to worry about for the everyday blogger? My question is, have you ever received money or gifts for your posts? A simple example of this is a blog that displays a list of today’s most popular posts on the sidebar. The list changes based on visitors’ behavior so to this is definitely a smart blog feature. There are plenty of WordPress plugins out there that do this for you automatically (e.g. Top 10), but that is not the point. The point here is that having the ability to morph your blog per visitor activity can assist you in meeting your conversion goals (whatever they may be). A list of popular posts is quite a simple feature, so let me take you to another level by showing you more ways to make your blog smart. List of “Smart” Features to […]

Business of Blogging, General

If you were ever thinking of running Chitika MiniMalls like the one showed in this post, use this referral to signup. (I do get some revenue from your referral). The ads were at an inopportune time for me and tended to produce about twice as much as Adsense in a given day over the small testing period I had setup. I might use them again in the future. Various different blog posts, sites and programs will help you tweak these ads to get the best results. Please understand that it is legal to run both Chitika Minimalls and Adsense on the same page as long as Chitika is set to be non-contenxtual. Link to signup for Chitika Minimalls
