WPBlacklist 2.6 released

WPBlacklist 2.5 was doing so well on catching comment spam and deleting it, that I wanted to improve upon it by adding the ability to harvest spammer details from automatically deleted comments so that the blacklist would continue to improve. This was the main feature addition to this new release though there are a couple of other changes and a bug fix included in there. You can download the new version here and read a detailed description of all the new changes here.

WPBlacklist 2.5 released :)

I guess I shouldn’t have been in such a big hurry to post about WPBlacklist 2.01 in the previous post because 2.5 is ready and has been just released :p The new release adds automatic deletion of comments marked as spam and allows you to select which items are automatically deleted. Not only that, if you select the option, the new plugin will also e-mail you with full details of the automatically deleted comments. A full description of the new features can be read in this blog entry and you can download the new release from here. If you install the new release, be sure to read the included readme.txt file to find out how to upgrade or at least run the Installer link under the plugin description on the Plugins tab of your WP control panel after you install the plugin. The installer has to be run even for […]

The recently released WPBlacklist 2.0 version had a few bugs which made the plugin work quirkily or worse yet, present the user with a stream of error messages when they tried to post a comment after certain URLs had been harvested by the new mass-deletion facility. So, I’ve released WPBlacklist 2.01 to fix these problems. You can download it from here. In the meantime, I’m working on WPBlacklist 2.5 which will allow auto-deletion of spam comments and an e-mail notification facility for comments which are automatically deleted. Hopefully, I should be able to release 2.5 in a day or two 🙂

MessageCast, Inc. has a product called LiveMessage Blogger Edition which provides new post alerts for blogs (among other things). The full range of services is listed on their website but the free blogger Alerts allows counting of clickthroughs generated via LiveMessage and ease of setup. The basic utility of LiveMessage is to have the ability to route messages (alerts of any kind) to customers’ messaging devices by intelligently detecting the preferred (and active) mobile device to send the message to (thus eliminating Spam etc.). Consider this another way to distribute blog updates for your readers and in the process, pick up a bunch of new visitors to your blog. [EDIT] Here is the link to get MessageCast for this blog

General, Weblog Add-Ons

As a response to the many recent articles written about comment spam in blogs and their prevention methods, I thought it would be useful to list all of the existing methods available for WordPress (both in the core and as plugins and hacks) to prevent spammers from targeting your blog and succeeding. I would appreciate it if WordPress users would report their successes and failures with the various methods. WordPress already has very robust comment spam prevention mechanisms built into the core. To prevent spam you could: Turn on comment approval, where every comment would have to be approved by an administrator before it is posted on your live blog Force the user to fill out their name and email before they are allowed to post a comment Force a comment to be moderated based on the number of links in the comment (links being a major part of most […]

Web Design Practices | Faceted Classification: “77% of sites using faceted classification provided faceted navigation, but no facet-based advanced search.”. That would be a very interesting feature addition to WordPress, search by category. If someone does not beat me to it, I will try to put something together. Via: Digital Web Magazine
