Mullenweg launches Automattic: There are times in ones’ life when they kick themselves for not having done something that was staring them in the face, feel like they have let themselves down but are still incerdibly happy for the way the cookie crumbled. This happens to be one such situation for me. Congratulations Matt! This is well deserved and I laud you (and your cohorts) and your efforts.

What would you think of a simpler news submission mechanism (e.g. a highly hacked BBPress) that would let you submit your own WordPress/blogging news to WeblogToolsCollection without too much trouble? The posts show in the sidebar (original sidebar code from Photomatt), users are able to post their comments on news, support is STILL provided (and should be sought) at the WordPress forums and I will pick and choose interesting tidbits to display on the front page. Please register yourself on the News page and post all your new items through there. This new development is to alleviate the problem of people having to wait for me to have the time to post their news. I think this will increase productivity but time will tell. Go here to register. Go here for the Latest News.

General, WordPress Plugins

I have upgraded and consolidated my old Contextual Related Posts Plugin for WordPress. This new version (1.1) is a simple install (just install the plugin file) and it will show the last 5 related posts from your blog. The display show the links right after the comment form. The matching is done with the post title of the post being viewed. Examples include my Green Car Blog (wordpress 2.0) and Desi Dalal (WordPress 1.5) PS: Some theme authors tend to remove default actions from their themes (Rin is a good example). If you are having problems displaying the related posts, please check with your theme author or post a comment here for help. Download Contextual Related Posts Plugin Download the updated version of Contextual Related Posts.

I find it quite irritating that I have to install iTunes if I want to install QuickTime on my computer. Thankfully, it can be uninstalled seperate from QuickTime, but I did not think that Apple had to resort to such techniques to get people to use their software. I use iTunes on my desktop at home but would rather keep it off my laptop. Is that too much to ask?

Opinion: Is open source a bubble ready to burst?: Some fear the spike in open source investment is a sign that it might be a bubble about to burst; others say it backs up the model’s fundamental viability Do people really still think that open Source is not a viable business model? People make money from Open Source, more so now than ever in the history of computing. The Open Source business model, under a good business administrator, can make money. I think what people tend to forget is that any business can fail if not tended to properly and if led by a weak and/or wavering administrator. The fact that more people are investing in and participating in businesses guided by Open Source ideals means that more people will fail and more people will lose money in the process. Just pure numbers, not the bursting of a bubble.

It’s been quite some time since we have reported back about Top100bloggers.com, but we’ve been really busy with the community. The community recently upgraded the site to a new and feature-rich application. With that upgrade came along a new design as well. Top100Bloggers.com has seen an exponentially amazing growth in the recent months. We have seen the community jump from only 100 members to currently over 700 members. We see new members signing up everyday, which is very encouraging to us as community builder. We, as the Top100Bloggers.com staff, are here to support the users and server the community as best as possible. We are always eager to receive feedback and hear about cool events going on in bloggers’ lives. As a last note in the update about our community, we recently (about 2 weeks ago), moved to a dedicated server because the shared hosting we were on was not […]

Opinion: Flock Never Stood A Chance

Opinion: Flock Never Stood A Chance I simply do not see the need for Flock in my set of web tools, but then again I have never used tools developed by others to perform my itch/scratch functions (translated: written my own or emulated an existing one when I needed them). I believe that Flock is a good idea but the need is too fragmented. The number of people what would want the gamut of features that Flock offers from within their browser is not enough to employ 13 people (I think) on a full time basis. That being said, I am sure that Flock and its team has a lot of talent and good ideas going for them. I would just need to be really razzled and dazzled for me to switch to another browser besides the Fox.
