As of last week, Akismet had blocked 100,000 spam comments from this blog. Yes, you read right, a cool hundred thousand. In respect for that milestone, would like to go on record as a paid subscriber of Akismet as of next month. Weblogtoolscollection.com has seen its share of spam and was mentioned in one of the blog updates of Akismet with numbers hovering in the 99.51% comment spam range. Akismet has served me well barring a few offbeat social spam comments and I feel that the developers deserve to be rewarded for their efforts and their service (though I wish I would make anywhere near the money that paid subscribers are supposed to be making from their blogs). I was in the spam mitigation business with CSPAM and Three Strikes and though the service could only handle a few thousand blogs on my old server, it was quite a trip. […]

Cell Phone Tools Collection Yes, the name has been used before, but what can I say, it fits. 🙂 Check out some of the new features including [EDIT] a new text message sender in addition to a bunch of bugfixes. A lot more is coming in the very near future.

Tag Cloud A reader asks: Do you get anything out of the tagcloud at the bottom Weblog Tools Collection’s navigation page? I personally like to know what gets thrown on top of which piles. However, are tag clouds useless? Are they useless in the context of blogs? What do you get out of the tag cloud from weblogtoolscollection.com? Did you know it existed? And last but not the least, have you every used a tag cloud to any level of usefulness beside just looking cool?

Most of us either have the Google Toolbar installed in IE and/or have a google search bar in Firefox/Mozilla. My question is, how many of us actually use the toolbar to search for things as opposed to visiting the Google homepage to make the queries? I personally feel that the Google Homepage helps me formulate the search query better and find myself predominately using the Google Homepage.

Blog advertising is a prickly slope. I have dabbled in this poison for almost as long as I have blogged. Most of my adventures have been less than satisfactory and I have made just enough money to help me host my blogs and services. I recently decided to give Text-Link-Ads a try. I really like it so far. This mode of advertising works much better than contextual advertising for sites such as mine. Text-Link-Ads are easy to setup and their customer service is excellent. There have been some bugs and discrepancies while they upgraded their systems and changed things around but these have always been resolved to my satisfaction without my interference. Patrick Gavin knows what customer service and a customer based business model is all about. I love to promote and help businesses that I like. Text-Link-Ads offers a good product, are very easy to deal with and can […]

Google Ads getting nastier?

I thought that ads with sexual content would not be displayed through Ad-Sense. But this morning I was quite rudely surprised to see a blatent sex ad on my personal blog. It was from sex_by_state or something of that nature. If Google is going to allow sexual content in their ads, I might need to make some changes to prevent that. I wonder if this was a mistake or if Google has changed some policies. Was I mistaken in assuming that AdSense does not allow sexual content or did I miss something completely??

Ringtone Uploader Updated: By popular request, I have updated my free ringtone uploader. Now it includes Virgin Mobile, T Mobile UK, AT&T, Sprint PCS, Cingular, T Mobile US, US Cellular, Verizon, Alltel and Nextel. Uploads work in some cases and fail miserably in others. I know it works well for Sprint PCS since I have tested it extensively myself! 😉 You will need internet access on your phone to be able to download the ringtones. Charges may apply from your carrier for Internet Services. I try to resolve bugs as soon as possible so please post any problems you might have. I might add a text messaging and blog posting system if the mood strikes. Have fun!

It looks like I am going to be at Calcutta, India for two weeks around the end of February and would like to get together with WordPress and blogging folks from that region. March 4th (Saturday) is the tentative date for the meetup and my initial thoughts are to meet at the Park Hotel (on Park Street). I will post updates as and when they develop. I would like to judge the level of interest. Please leave a comment if you are interested. Also, please link to this post if it would help to get the word out. [EDIT]: Not sure if people realize this or not, but I am originally from Calcutta, India. My fiance’ and I are going to visit my parents for a couple of weeks and this is more of a pleasure trip than anything business. Any business conducted will be incidental and will have less […]
