This is pretty exciting news and I am very enthusiastic about it. The new WordPress Theme Directory has just been announced. It is available through http://wordpress.org/extend/themes just like the plugin directory and has all the features and infrastructure support of the WordPress Extend umbrella. The look of the plugin area has also been maintained to provide a familiar feel. That being said, there are only a few themes on the new directory. You can upload your themes by just logging into the Theme Directory using your WordPress.org username and password and following the instructions and meeting the requirements on the upload page. The theme upload process is mostly automated except for a manual review. When you upload your theme, you should expect to receive an email (soon after uploading your theme, email reception times may vary) saying that your theme is waiting to be reviewed. If you do not receive […]

WordPress for iPhone: Big news from the Automattic team yesterday. They released a first look at their iPhone App that works on both WordPress.com and WordPress.org blogs. The application is Open Source, available from the iPhone App store and will be available for free. The screen real estate problem with the large on screen keyboard looks to be largely solved with this app and it adds the ability to modify previous posts and view your blog on the web. The official iPhone app for WordPress blog is linked above. The application received rave reviews from a variety of sources such as TechCrunch and Webware and ma.tt talked about it yesterday. Check out the screencast when you get a chance. It definitely has a wow factor.

WordPress 2.5 was just released a few months ago and WordPress 2.6 has been in development for some time to be released very soon. Not only does WordPress 2.6 add more zing to a platform that has already won hearts and made blogging a wonderful experience, there are few features in WordPress 2.6 that many have requested and some that caused a little controversy. Let’s get to know a few things about WordPress 2.6 that will definitely raise few eyebrows albeit a few of them in the wrong way. Post Revisioning I have been a Software developer for quite long now and know how important CVS or SVN is to maintaining different versions of a file. WordPress 2.6 brings the same functionality to posts where you can have different revisions for posts. In lay terms this means that no matter how many times you make changes to the post, you […]

What is the simplest WordPress blog you’ve seen?

This post is based on a question that was posted on reddit.com which really intrigued me. I have seen a lot of WordPress blogs that are so simple and so well constructed that they blew me away and inspired me to do more to make my blogs simple(r). I just have a hard time finding them when the time is right and I am about to make changes to my designs. In that spirit, what is the simplest and most elegant WordPress design that you have come across? Lloyd’s blog comes to mind as a good example.

WordPress.com 2.5 Essential Training Videos

WordPress.com 2.5 Essential Training at lynda.com Online Training Library® is a set of training videos by Maria Langer (who also happens to be a professional helicopter pilot) that walk through the setup and use of WordPress as a blogging tool. Sadly, the title of this set of videos might be a bit misleading (though the title does indeed say WordPress.com, I was taken by the version number in the title) since the videos are tailored for WordPress.com blogs and not for self hosted WordPress.org blogs. However, a few of the initial videos are offered for free download and the only option for purchase of the full set is via a monthly subscription for $25 which would give the user access to all the videos on lynda.com. There are plans to sell the videos as a CDROM for purchase but those are not available as of this post. The videos are […]

Hot or Not: TypePad AntiSpam

I received a ping from Anil on their newly released beta product TypePad AntiSpam while I was on vacation. I told Anil that I would look into it and write a balanced article on it when I got back. I procrastinated on writing the post for quite a while but that also gave me the chance to think about the product quite a bit, have some conversations with Anil and others about the product and ruminate on the merits, usefulness and finally the viability of the service. It came as no surprise to me that Six Apart would come up with such a product and the choices made for the product are even lesser of a surprise. I had some initial thoughts on branding and the nature of the product that I communicated to Anil privately but the rest of the review of the technology and the service is my […]

Blogging News, WordPress Plugins

Lester Chan’s GaMerZ has announced that he has unleashed the first wave of updates for 11 of his WordPress plugins. These include: WP-EMail 2.30 WP-PageNavi 2.30 WP-PluginsUsed 1.30 WP-Polls 2.30 WP-PostRatings 1.30 WP-Print 2.30 WP-RelativeDate 1.30 WP-ServerInfo 1.30 WP-Sticky 1.30 WP-Stats 2.30 WP-Useronline 2.30 The remaining four plugins, WP-Ban, WP-DBManager, WP-DownloadManager, and WP-PostViews will be updated in wave two. Lester has stated that all of these plugins should work in WordPress 2.5 only and they have not been tested in any version below 2.5. Also worthy of note is that the folder path of some of the plugins have been fixed. Previously, the path was nested in another folder which generated a ton of hate mail for Lester because it broke automatic updates. Now that the path has been fixed, the automatic plugin upgrade feature should work correctly. *Note* I updated my GaMerZ plugins today on my personal blog through […]
