Permalinks are an important key for search engine optimization. Bots such as Googlebot have gotten a lot smarter where they can index links even if they’re using a query, such as example.com/?p=535, but that’s not search engine friendly at all. There are really two angles you can look at when setting up your permalinks. The first angle to look at it is from the Bot’s point of view (“POV”). The bot is looking at the permalink and it first tries to recognize what that page is about by what the permalink says. If a permalink just has domain.com/article/798724, the bot knows that it’s an article and…well, that’s about it really. But let’s say that you had something like what WLTC uses here: http://weblogtoolsc…gle-subscribers/. The bot knows that it’s about feedburner, google, subscribers, and that it’s an archived page on that site. Not to forget it also knows the date of […]

TextMark SMS Alerts TextMark is going to announce a paid service that sends SMS alerts for breaking news from a blog. I simply cannot see people paying upto $9.99 for this service. TechCrunch says that the bloggers get to keep a third of the subscription charges but in this world of RSS and River of News why would …. ? Oh, well. Thats not the crux of this post. I already run a service where users can send ringtones, pictures, applications and text messages to their cell phones from a browser as long as they have access to the Internet on their phones and can receive SMS/text messages. The code is really surprisingly simple and it has been running for years with very little input from me. Over a 20,000 unique cell phones have received files and messages from this service since the beginning of this year alone. The point […]

I use the PSXMail plugin for the contact form on this blog and I recently started to get a whole bunch of spam-like inane comments that did not make a whole lot of sense. The Akismet API is so easy to setup and test that I figured I would add the Akismet comment test to the PSXMail plugin and make everyone’s life easier. In case others find it useful, you can download the latest version of this plugin below. Please report any bugs. NOTE: You have to have Akismet installed and activated as a plugin already with a valid Akismet Key. Upgrade: Simply upload the new file and Akismet will take care of everything in the background. Installation: Download the zip file, unzip, upload to your plugin directory and activate. Then create a new page with the word mailform within curly brackets as the content of the page. Now link […]

Feedburner and Google Subscribers The Google Reader blog said yesterday that Google reader was now reporting subscriber numbers. The Feedburner folks were right on the ball (as usual) and now their subscriber numbers take into account Google Reader Subscriber numbers as well. Some other people have been reporting astonishing numbers.
