It’s worth noting that the “old” method of showing comments will still work. So upgrading to 2.7 will not break a theme or a site.

However, the theme won’t be able to do paging or threading of comments until these sorts of modifications are made to it.

Wow, thanks for the information. It’s nice to know that “old” themes will still work in WordPress 2.7, albeit with the threadless comment system.

I will look into adding 2.7 comment support into my site’s theme, as I have pretty much turned into the maintainer of my website’s theme. The original guy dropped off the face of the earth and I’ve since added widget support (back in WordPress 2.3).

      Thanks again.

Thanks for posting this. I was just hunting around for this very information this morning.

Thanks for the heads up – I’m working on a few themes right now so it’s good to know the changes that will make or break my design.

And thanks Otto for the info on it not breaking my current theme. I don’t want anything to happen to my blog now that I get SOME decent traffic!

This post’s title is very misleading. As Otto pointed out, all themes should work perfectly fine in 2.7 and work exactly the same as they did in the previous version.

I am not sure it is “very” misleading but I do agree that the distinction needs to be pointed out. Edited the post, thanks for the heads up.

I found that I had to modify my comments.php file heavily on my current theme. After some frustrating moments (lol), I ended up using the comments.php from WP 2.7 Default theme and copy-paste the threaded comments CSS styles to my theme’s CSS file.

It works now. Not really what I want, but at least I can now enjoy threaded comments on my blog! :) Love this feature so much as you can easily interact with your readers now

Try this blog entry on wordpress.org

  1. […] It has been a while since I posted on this website. I am planning to release a couple of themes as soon as the newer version of WordPress [Version 2.7] is being released. The next version is going to present new features for the Comments section. I read a post on WebLogToolCollection about WordPress 2.7 and Comments. […]
