Plugin Review: YouTube Comparison

John Young contacted us via our shiny new Plugin Review form and asked for our thoughts on the best YouTube embedding plugin for WordPress out of Youtuber, Youtube Embedder, and WP YouTube Player. As this is a comparison request, I’m going to approach from less of a review angle, and more of a well . . . a comparison. Fortunately, the subject of which YouTube plugin to use is relatively easy. YouTube embeds have been built-into WordPress for quite some time. All you need to do is paste the YouTube URL into your post and WordPress takes care of the rest. New plugins ImageShare adds social bookmarking buttons to images in your blog posts. Javascript Flickr Badge uses pure javascript to place a Flickr badge in your widget-enabled sidebar to display recent photos. Post UI Tabs allows you to create jQuery tabs inside your posts, pages or post types using simple shortcodes inside the post editor. Updated plugins IE6 Upgrade Option displays a warning message, simply and politely informing the user that their browser is out of date while providing links to download newer, more optimal browser choices. jQuery Vertical Mega Menu allows you to quickly and easily create vertical mega menus from any WordPress custom menu.

A week ago, we asked if you’d be interested in seeing a few plugin reviews from us. I’m happy to say that the response was overwhelmingly positive. As of today, 96.97% said “Of course I would!” and only 3.03% said “Yawn, boring!” With that said, the new plugin review submission form is ready to go! Is there a plugin that you’d like reviewed? So, you have a plugin requiring that you make a change to one of your WordPress theme templates, or you just want move something around in your theme or alter your CSS. You’ve arrived at Appearance -> Editor as instructed, but there’s no “Update File” button. This is unfortunately another one of those common annoyances related to your hosting provider’s server configuration that can take you off guard and lead to plenty of confusion. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix (or work around). Try changing the permissions of the theme files that you want to edit to 666. If that doesn’t work, just use an FTP or SFTP client and a plain text editor to edit them remotely. Of course, if neither of those methods are working out for you, please stop by the WordPress Support Forums for further assistance.
