The uploader of the official WordPress theme directory has received a rather helpful upgrade courtesy of Otto. The previous version of the WordPress theme uploader checked the themes against the theme review guidelines, but only reported the first error that it encountered, sometimes trapping theme developers in a frustrating cycle of trial and error. The new version performs an even more intensive scan of the theme and returns a list of all results, providing theme developers with a handy to-do list to get their themes up to spec for the directory. There are thousands of themes available for WordPress. Today, the largest collection of WordPress themes can still be found through the official Theme Directory and its Tag Filter, but two new directories have brought some new concepts to the plate when it comes to finding your next WordPress theme. WPCandy’s Theme Finder offers an elimination-style overview of available themes utilizing color, number of columns, and price (free v.s paid) as factors. Theme Garden’s Layout Browser offers a very comprehensive directory of themes based strictly on layout. While WPCandy’s Theme Finder is filled with mostly premium themes and Theme Garden’s Layout Browser is restricted solely to their theme marketplace, the two bring something new to a field that was long thought to be well saturated by the official Theme Directory. [Continue Reading...]This is pretty exciting news and I am very enthusiastic about it. The new WordPress Theme Directory has just been announced. It is available through http://wordpress.org/extend/themes just like the plugin directory and has all the features and infrastructure support of the WordPress Extend umbrella. The look of the plugin area has also been maintained to provide a familiar feel. That being said, there are only a few themes on the new directory. You can upload your themes by just logging into the Theme Directory using your WordPress.org username and password and following the instructions and meeting the requirements on the upload page. The theme upload process is mostly automated except for a manual review. When you upload your theme, you should expect to receive an email (soon after uploading your theme, email reception times may vary) saying that your theme is waiting to be reviewed.
