WordPress is one of the simplest self-hosted blogging platforms around, but working with multisite is a different beast altogether. Sure, there are a few online guides and tutorials, but this is just one of those things you should really read up on before diving in. Mika Epstein, one of the top volunteers in the WordPress Support Forums, has just published WordPress Multisite 101, a pay-what-you-want eBook available in EPUB and PDF formats. The suggested donation for the book is $5, but depending on how useful you find it, there’s nothing stopping you from sending $10, $20, maybe even $100, or the inevitable nothing if that’s how you roll. The book covers everything from getting started to running your own network, and you will always have the forums if you need further assistance.

When WordPress 3 launched on June 17th of 2010, the ability to run a multisite network from a single installation quickly became one of the most talked about features. Formerly known as WordPress MU, this entirely separate WordPress project was simultaneously upgraded and merged with the main WordPress branch. Many were expecting WordPress Multisite to carry with it the usual WordPress simplicity, but there’s quite a bit more to do after WordPress’ famous 5-minute installation when creating a multisite network, and the complexities of the network system have led to some confusion and questions along the way. WordPress 3.0 Walkthrough: Multsite Multisite is the most talked about new feature in WordPress 3.0 – the WordPress team has folded the functionality of WordPress Multiuser into the main WordPress project. So how do you use it? This tutorial assumes your are comfortable using FTP clients such as Filezilla and doing basic edits of WordPress files. 1. Download WordPress 3.0 release candidate. You can find it here. 2. Edit wp-config in your favorite text editor and add the following line: define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true); (I’d suggest adding it just above the line “// ** MySQL settings – You can get this info from your web host ** //”) 3. Install WordPress normally NOTE: If you’ve already installed WordPress 3.0, just edit wp-config and add that line of code, there’s no need to re-install. 4.
