iThemes has now added a huge student discount to their popular Web Designer’s Toolkit. The new Student Edition offers full-time students in the US and Canada access to over 150 themes, over 20 plugins, and over 300 hours of training for only $97 ($880 less than the original). Folks with a strong memory may notice the similarity to iThemes’s Educator Program. While the Student Edition of the toolkit is not free, the $880 discount is something that can’t be beat, especially if you’re busy spending money on your tuition. If you have plans to launch a WordPress-focused career in design, consulting, maintenance, and other such things, this is a great way to get a head start. iThemes is launching an outstanding program designed for educators, “focusing on delivering high-quality web design tools and training to the education community.” To get the ball rolling, they’re asking for only 100 qualified educators to apply before October 1st. Those who are accepted into the beta run will receive over 150 high-quality themes, over 20 plugins, 300 hours of professional training, and more as the year continues. Not only is WordPress the most popular blogging platform today, it’s also become quite popular as a class resource. Many teachers are setting up P2-themed blogs for class discussion or simply using WordPress as a base (with no blog element) to provide class-related documents, movies, and more. As someone who was raised in a family of educators, it’s great to see a company like iThemes stepping up to provide such an all-in-one program to help other educators get started with WordPress, and it’s […]

Easier Theme Upgrades

Do you find upgrading themes to be a pain? To be honest, I don’t upgrade themes very often if at all but if you do, there is a newly created plugin that ought to make the process much easier on you. It’s called Easy Theme Upgrades and was developed by Chris Jean of iThemes. It’s quite simple to use. Upon giving it a test run this morning, it performed flawlessly without any errors. I also confirmed that the backup zip file contained the changes I made to the files before they were deleted. This is very handy considering many people hack their themes to bits and pieces. This method insures that you don’t lose those changes forever but instead, can go into the archived files to copy and paste your bits into the new version. One of the biggest fears in upgrading a theme is the fact that you’ll lose […]

iThemes is now GPL

Cory Miller’s iThemes is now completely GPL compliant! This is great news indeed and they are the second premium theme vendor who fully support the GPL and align their business models with that of WordPress and its community. Cory is a friend of mine and in full disclosure, has been an advertiser on this blog in the past. We have had various discussions about this topic and I am very happy that they have made the switch. Everyone will be better off for it. This change means that all themes purchased from iThemes can be installed on multiple blogs without restriction but they will continue to be supported as before. iThemes will continue to sell their themes and packages and provide the support for their themes but their themes will now be licensed under the GPL. This will mean more freedom for developers working with iThemes products (and thus more […]
