OpenID

OpenID According to Simon Willison, OpenID is a simple piece of infrastructure on which smart applications can be built and the buzz around OpenID is growing. This idea has been batted around for some time but the consolidation of ideas and a working version of the system really gives it some legitimacy. I still wonder what the uptake rate will be. If you are still wondering what OpenID is and what it can do for you, think of it as a decentralized authentication system much like Microsoft Passport but much less monolithic. I can still think of various problems (Tim outlines some of those in his post). However, a good use could be in the WordPress comment moderation system. Since WordPress allows comments from previously authorized commenters, OpenID could be a way to positively identify a “valid” commenter on your blog forever. Of course, if any centralized whitelist type service […]

FeedBurner Fatal Flaw

I love FeedBurner and I have been using their service for quite some time. I love their statistics and though I do not pay for the “Secret HallPass and Handshake” I really benefit from understanding subscription and and click patterns. However, Feedburner and consequently the FeedBurner Feed Replacement plugin suffers from a major flaw that has become quite irritating of late. The feed replacement plugin and Feedburner have very little granularity, a flaw that WordPress does not suffer from. As a matter of fact, WordPress’ feed versatility is one of the best in the industry and though the system is not without its weaknesses, it provides some of the most useful and varied options to distribute feeds. When I use Feedburner, I completely lose that versatility. Unless I can come up with a pain free method of re-instating the versatility (and it does not look good), I feel that the […]

CNET beta API: The initial dataset will include CNET’s full catalog of technology products and software titles. This is the same dataset that drives the highly trafficked sites of CNET Reviews, Shopper.com and Download.com. Over time, the API will add news articles, community content, blog posts and full product reviews. CNET introduced a REST API to allow users to tap into their rich content. At this time it is limited to the above sites but will be expanded into news, blogs and other community content. Their Dashboard is interesting but is there a real use for the community (yet) beside just increased exposure for CNET content?

Placeblogger: Local Blog Aggregator Blog aggregator designed to focus on a particular area. Someone referred to it as a MySpace for your town. I could barely find anything for my local area but it is new. I know that this idea has been floated around for a while and there was even a GeoURL Mashup somewhere. Lots of big name advisors on the project.

The 2006 Weblog Awards The winners have been announced and just as everyone must have suspected, the usual suspects were chosen for the same old police lineup and the witnesses pointed out the same criminals with over half a million fingers pointed, nonetheless. Not much is new (besides Fark maybe) and not too many exciting new places to view. Yes the TLLB Ecosystem is used to judge on a whole new set of categories, but that looks more like an afterthought. I wonder how the world of movies would judge their peers if movies could participate for subsequent years in the Oscars or if the movie houses (such as Pixar, MGM, Sony) could throw their names in the Oscar hat. If there were an Oscar for the Software world, would Microsoft and the FSF win every time? What is the point of knowing that Little Green Footballs was the best […]

AdSense and image placement We ask that publishers not line up images and ads in a way that suggests a relationship between the images and the ads. If your visitors believe that the images and the ads are directly associated, or that the advertiser is offering the exact item found in the neighboring image, they may click the ad expecting to find something that isn’t actually being offered. That’s not a good experience for users or advertisers. This is important for many AdSense publishers. From the examples that have been provided, if you are using a plugin like AdSense Beautifier, you might be violating Google’s AdSense policies and might want to look into removing the plugin.
