2006 Web Technology Trends An essay on web technology trends with some large generalizations, some major points and some minors thoughts from McManus. Whenever I see an article like this, I would also like to see some revenue numbers associated with each entry. Though Google was mentioned quite a few times throughout the article, there was no mention of Google’s stock prices or its market cap (which I think are very valid). Also, it would be very interesting to create a heat map of this article to see which phrases/names/buzzwords were used the most in describing tech trends in 2006.

KnowNow WordPress Enterprise Edition Toni spoke with MacManus about the collaboration between Automattic and KnowHow that developed into KWEE. KnowHow will market KWEE to their existing enterprise customer base and will also make it available for hosting on customers’ servers. The product will be shipped with Akismet (not sure about the remote component) and a stats package and any enhancements that the Knowhow folks will make to WordPress will be released back as Open Source. Link to Toni’s blog post announcing the collaboration and some of the explanation behind it.

Pew research on bloggers If you are into numbers and market research, this research report from the Pew Charitable Trusts might be of interest. Though no one report can really be trusted completely, the numbers, values and opinions are very interesting, especially if you are interested in monetizing the blogging population. Don’t forget to check out the actual PDF report.

Gallery 2 Theme Contest There is a theme contest going on for Gallery 2 with lots of money and prizes to be won. I personally use Gallery quite a bit and in spite of its problems, it is still the best online photo gallery I have come across. Submission deadline is January 14th. There is also a Gallery 2 Theme Contest Wiki. Thanks Steve

Digg the Blog The official digg blog is now on WordPress. I wish it used customized permalinks instead of the default format. I love the way they have used pictures for each author, this seems to have become the norm. A plugin that lets WordPress users use pictures for each author would be awsome! Anyone know of such a plugin?

Performancing has quietly released their ad network called Performancing Parters that lets bloggers to put up 125×125 graphical ads on their blogs on a revenue share basis. They give the blogger 70% of the revenue share and a very high 5% lifetime revenue share of any bloggers that you refer (which is quite nice really). Installation and setup is very simple and this can potentially create another method for bloggers to make some extra video game money. I have decided to give them a shot. They only support vertical ads for the time being but I am told that that will change in the future. I am thinking of reducing the presence of AdSense, which does not do very well. If the people that run a project can be any indication of its future performance, I would say that Performancing Partners is going to do really well. None of the […]

Google Ping: Google introduces their pinging service for blogs that will notify Google of changes. I am surprised to see very little discussion for this service but am not surprised with the lack of fanfare or threats of switching. Ping-O-Matic does such an amazing job (amazing == you set it and forget it; well if you use WordPress you don’t even need to set it) that I can never see myself switching.
