HOW-TO, WordPress Hack, WordPress Tips

I came across this neat tutorial that helps you create a home page for you blog with thumbnails for each article. It is a very detailed guide, and deals with modding the default Kubrick theme. The code snippets etc will be able to guide you through doing the same for other times, provided you are comfortable with editing php files.

WP Hack: AjaxWp Enhance and adorn your WordPress blog with AJAX goodness. From the documentation that I could find on the site, it looks like AJAXWP will add AJAX functionality to your existing theme without any required modifications but you can get a lot more from the package by delving under the covers. The author’s blog is an example of AJAXWP’s capabilities.

Related results from Search Engines?

Related results from Search Engines? Interesting question. I know that I had written a WordPress hack sometime ago that would post related links from Waypath but it was cumbersome and lacked caching. This might be an interesting plugin if someone wants to attempt to write it and it has not been written already. Caching the queries would be a must.

WordPress Hack, WordPress Plugins

Library Catalogs Should Be Like WordPress Library catalogs should be be like WordPress. That is, every entry should support comments, trackbacks, and pingbacks. Every record should have a permalink. Content should be tag-able. The look should be easily customizable with themes. Everything should be available via RSS or Atom. It should be extendable with a rich plugin API. And when that fails, it would be nice if it were all written in a convenient language like PHP so we can hack it ourselves. Beside the part about “written in a convenient language like PHP”, this would make library catalogs much more useful and entertaining. However, it would also add complexity and spam issues. Amazon has recently started a similar approach to their listings including adding a customer wiki. Thanks to Eric Schnell who posted a detailed review of the original thought and some insight into WordPress OPAC or WOPAC. This […]

Canvas for WordPress?

Canvas for WordPress? Anyone use this yet? It took me quite a while and quite a bit of digging into the forums to understand that canvas was a “layout management tool” that is used on top of a WordPress install. The site is well built and it looks like everything is new but it also looks like a whole lot of new code and complexity. No code was available as of this post but the screenshots look chock full of AJAX drag and drop. It could either raise the bar for WordPress theme management or fall back in development as the core progresses creating a code mess.

WP plugin: Installer Yup, a plugin that installs other plugins and themes. This is a really cool feature that might get further press yet. You can even install plugins and/or themes but just plugging in the URI of the plugin and everything else is taken care of. Of course, plugins that require changes to core code will not work. Also, correct permissions are crucial. Very cool nonetheless. While you are at it, check out other cool code from Matt.

Cool Scripts, LinkyLoo, WordPress Hack

BackupMyBlog: Daily, remote, PHP and MySql based blog backup solution. At this time they are running a free beta but it sounds like it will be a paid service. You could easily do this daily with wp-backup and wp-cron but remote backups might be a better solution for you. Maximum space allowed is 10 MB (which would not work for larger blogs). Anyone have any experience with them?
