Anconia RocketPost – Blogging Software: Publish blogs directly from your desktop with a multitude of features including imports from various blogging tools including WordPress and Movable Type. This is an interesting direction in blogging applications. The action of creating the blog is accomplished by a client side application and the static page is saved o a webserver. PHP Markdown 1.0

Matt Read posted a quick mention of the release of PHP Markdown on the WordPress Support forums so I thought I would pass this along to everyone. Michel Fortin has ported over John Gruber’s original Markdown into a plugin for WordPress as well as a tool for bBlog, Smarty, and other PHP-based tools. Here is some information directly from Michel’s site: PHP Markdown is a port of the original Markdown program from John Gruber. Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers. Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML). The overriding design goal for Markdown’s formatting syntax is to make it as readable as possible. The idea is that a Markdown-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it’s been marked up with tags or formatting instructions. While Markdown’s syntax has […]

Stephanie Booth’s Musings on a Multiblog WordPress

Climb to the Stars >> Musings on a Multiblog WordPress: Some interesting thoughts there and I could add some of my own but I have been waiting for *********’s proof of concept to surface. I personally believe that rather than trying to re-engineer an existing wordpress version, we should encourage authors to try to write for the codebase. Putting together a multiple weblog version of WordPress is not going to be simple by any means and if it HAS to be invented, it should be done one time and done right. My thoughts about the implementation are slightly different from Stephanies’. I believe that a multiple weblog (considering the number of blogs hosted can rise to the thousands) should use caching. Which brings me back to staticize(sp?). I propose that every folder that is supposed to contain a portion of the multiple blog, has an index and the cache files […]

Gzip Compression issue in WordPress 1.2 Mingus

responses

I had noticed this error on Carthik’s Blog and have since seen/noticed it on a couple of other sites as well. Here is the issue. When a blogging tool (such as WordPress) uses ob_start and then gzip compression to send pages to the client, at times, a (sometimes silent) warning pops up which basically means that the gzip compression is not really taking place. Here is an example of the error: Warning: ob_start(): output handler ‘ob_gzhandler’ cannot be used after ‘URL-Rewriter’ You can check this for your own site/blog by visiting http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ and analyzing your site. Make sure that you have gzip compression turned on in your WordPress control panel (or somewhere on your site, if not on WordPress) and see if the analyzer complains about gzip being turned off. More than likely, you will find that though gzip is turned on, it is not being used. In order to […]
