Is PubSub Jaded?

I have been noticing this over the last couple of weeks, but is the Pubsub LinkRank jaded against WordPress blogs somehow?? It looks as if somewhere around a week and a half ago, something was changed in the algorithm that completely trounced the rank of WordPress blogs, even the really popular ones while others continue to flourish. Photomatt’s LinkRank BinaryBonsai’s LinkRank Dougal’s LinkRank WordLog’s LinkRank However, Scoble’s LinkRank continues to grow. All of these ranks, including the one for this blog, are either askewed or are borked. Is this a result of some sort of a WordPress bug, vendetta against WordPress or a bug on PubSub’s side? Or maybe it was due to an attempt to fix the algorithm that went horribly wrong for WordPress users? (All of this is really not as serious as I would like to make it sound, so be gentle! 🙂 ) What do you […]

Three Strikes Spam 1.2 Alpha Now with an added Naive Bayesian Filter

This is an alpha version of the new version of the Three Strikes Spam Filter Plugin for WordPress. This version has various bugfixes and a hidden gem that I have wanted to work with for some time. This version of the filter has a Naive Bayesian filter added to the other checks that were already being performed by the Three Strikes Plugin. The plugin, once installed, learns from all the comments that are posted on your blog. It then waits for spam. Once a comment is determined to be spam, its Bayes filter learns about the spam comment. Kitten’s Spam Words is added to the interface to simplify addition of spam words and the install instructions are included within the download zip. I suggest the use of my dynamic list of spam words as a starting point for the plugin. This is termed alpha software for a reason. It is […]

I say Plugins very loosely and I mean plugin, hack, mod list. So what do you think are THE definitive plugins for WordPress? Which are the plugins that you simply could not do without? Are there any that are hidden gems that I have not noticed? Please limit your suggestions and links to WordPress version 1.2 and above only. What new plugin, when and if developed, would become the definitive plugin for WordPress (spam panacea notwithstanding)?

If you use any type of blacklisting for comments in your blog, you need a list of words/phrases/ip addresses that are fresh and prolific in spam. Here is a list of 2000 spammer IPs and commonly used words and phrases out of CSPAM. These are the most prolific spammers’ IPs and the most used spam words. In order to add this to your Spamwords list in WordPress, simply open the URL, view source, select all, copy and paste into the spam words form in WordPress. This list can be used with ANY blogging tool that has blacklisting capabilities. Dynamic Comment Spam Blacklist I would also like to make some announcements about the CSPAM project. It will be released under the auspices of GPL. I envision CSPAM to work with all blogging tools that support xmlrpc (and a few people already share my vision of CSPAM). An SVN has been setup […]

General, WordPress Hack

This was recently brought to my attention by Adam Messinger who had trouble accessing this blogs’ feeds through a .NET based feed reader. Apparently …this is caused by a known bug in WP 1.2, which produces HTTP headers that don’t sit well with .Net since a security patch released early this fall. Readers written with .Net refuse to process affected WP feeds, citing an “HTTP protocol violation.” An easy fix for this can be found at http://technospin.org/index.php?p=14. Apparently this has been addressed already in the forums and in the CVS from what I see. WordPress 1.2.1 DOES NOT have this fix, but the CVS and all 1.3 Alphas do have it. So if you are running WordPress 1.2 or WordPress 1.2.1 and have not applied this fix, I suggest that you open up your wp-blog-header.php and replace the “Last Modified” (at line 77) with “Last-Modified”. Thanks Adam!

I would like to share my list of spamwords and IPs (which can be dynamically generated by a user) but rather than giving it out in public, I would like to entrust a few people I know well to share it with a few people that they know well and pass it on in that manner. If you would like to know the dynamic link that generates the list (and be entrusted with the link for distribution), please leave a comment or email me. The list, at this time, contains the 1000 most prolific IPs and 1000 most prolific phrases in spam comments. The actual list is MUCH larger. In other news, the CSPAM service should be much more robust now, with the ability to handle a higher load of spam. Various analytical features have been added and it is ready for some more blogs. If you would like to […]
