India Imposes Ban on Blogs? I pose this link as a question because there seems to be a lot of misinformation surrounding this topic with no specific answer from the authorities. The various comments suggest that this ban might be sporadic at best though there definitely is a problem. If you are viewing this blog from India, what are your thoughts? Can you visit the allegedly banned pages from your ISPs’ connection?

Dell Weblog: Lots has been written about Dell’s foray into the blogosphere. I am not privy to the insider information that many of the above authors are, but it seems as though this is an attempt by Dell to make things more personal. I see shades of Channel 9 with the various vlog entries promoting new items and flashes of GM’s blog. Even the “About” page link location and theme (content) looks similar to GMs. Maybe they used the same company? This smells more of cheap advertising than anything else. Maybe this is a start, but Dell could have done much better with the resources they must have at their disposal. Maybe Scoble is a rarity but I find it hard to believe that they could not find a CBO worth their salt to provide the sushi rice to hold it all together.

WP plugin: Bad Behavior 2 This new version of Bad Behavior has a bunch of new features including faster code, variable strictness of traffic filtering, lesser usage of the database (which is really important for higher traffic sites) and a new wrapper API. Bad Behavior is now also available for ExpressionEngine, MediaWiki and generic non-database mode for any PHP script, forum, guestbook, Movable Type, etc. Thanks Michael va email.

Find Me A Cure: I finally got my dad to blog about something that he cares deeply about and has a lot of good information on. I have been practicing yoga on and off all of my life and have been coached and coaxed by my dad to try alternative forms of medication, treatment and therapy for as long as I can remember. Some of these have worked wonders for me, others have failed to make much of a difference. But I trust his judgement, appreciate his knowledge and I really value his opinions on yoga, alternative medication and therapy. My father is a complete Internet newbie. You could almost call him a perpetual newbie since most concepts of the Internet are beyond what he wants to learn or cares to understand. I made him buy his first computer for our Calcutta home approximately six years ago and he has […]

Air Force Blog Study: The Air Force has funded a $450,000 study on blogs and blogging as a part of the war on terror. We are developing an automated tool to tell analysts what bloggers are most interested in at a point in time. Sounds like Memeorandum (insert other web 2.0 news/meme/tag site). Thanks Blogging Blog

Cool Scripts, General

eBay SMS Alert: If you have ever used eBay and have lost an item to another fellow bidder because you were either too lazy or just did not remember to check your bid, you might also have noticed that eBay provides an SMS alert service to its customers. They promise to alert you via SMS when you are outbid on your auction. However, they charge 25 cents per item for this service. I wrote a small script that does just that and would like to share it with everyone. This is itch and scratch software and has been only tested with my phone and my small list of items. I am at the mercy of eBay and will have to limit the number of alerts on queue. Things might and probably will break, so please use at your own risk. I am not responsible for damages and/or charges on your […]

Related results from Search Engines?

Related results from Search Engines? Interesting question. I know that I had written a WordPress hack sometime ago that would post related links from Waypath but it was cumbersome and lacked caching. This might be an interesting plugin if someone wants to attempt to write it and it has not been written already. Caching the queries would be a must.

If you run Linux and have been working with the filesystem(s) for any length of time, you have used and abused rm. However, when the number of files concerned is very large or there are unescaped characters in your filenames, rm can misbehave. The following code will take care of all your worries. The exec command always makes me stand back and wonder at the power of the Linux shell. find . -name ‘*.*’ -exec rm {} \; From: http://howtos.linux.com/guides/abs-guide/moreadv.shtml Also, Veen overhears an rm conversation [EDIT] Be very careful using find to remove files.
