Have you ever wished you could issue simple shell commands through your WordPress interface to, say, quickly change the permissions of a file and then change them back or be able to see what processes are active and kill a process? Have you wanted to have SSH access to your server but your web service does not allow that? Do you have “system” enabled for your PHP? I am not sure if that title does this hack justice but here goes. This will allow a WordPress user to execute simple shell commands and output them to the browser. [Continue Reading...]I had noticed this error on Carthik’s Blog and have since seen/noticed it on a couple of other sites as well. Here is the issue. When a blogging tool (such as WordPress) uses ob_start and then gzip compression to send pages to the client, at times, a (sometimes silent) warning pops up which basically means that the gzip compression is not really taking place. Here is an example of the error: Warning: ob_start(): output handler ‘ob_gzhandler’ cannot be used after ‘URL-Rewriter’ You can check this for your own site/blog by visiting http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ and analyzing your site. Make sure that you have gzip compression turned on in your WordPress control panel (or somewhere on your site, if not on WordPress) and see if the analyzer complains about gzip being turned off. I have used a bunch of tools over the years to try to search within files, folder and drives, but have yet to find something that works everywhere and in every case. Lately, I have been using the Windows search tool (the one that comes default with the OS) with some success. So if you are on a Windows Platform, create an import.reg file with the following in it (where .phps is replaced with the extension of files you would like to search inside, such as .cfm .php or .xml). Multiple ones can be added by making copies of the registry key and replacing the extension. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.phps\PersistentHandler] @=”{5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}” Save, double click, say yes, reboot and voila, now it searches inside those files for you. One little tip, try to edit with the default Windows editor or Notepad to get the best results.
