TextMark SMS Alerts TextMark is going to announce a paid service that sends SMS alerts for breaking news from a blog. I simply cannot see people paying upto $9.99 for this service. TechCrunch says that the bloggers get to keep a third of the subscription charges but in this world of RSS and River of News why would …. ? Oh, well. Thats not the crux of this post. I already run a service where users can send ringtones, pictures, applications and text messages to their cell phones from a browser as long as they have access to the Internet on their phones and can receive SMS/text messages. The code is really surprisingly simple and it has been running for years with very little input from me. Over a 20,000 unique cell phones have received files and messages from this service since the beginning of this year alone. The point […]

WP Plugin: PXSMail with Akismet

WordPress Plugins

I use the PSXMail plugin for the contact form on this blog and I recently started to get a whole bunch of spam-like inane comments that did not make a whole lot of sense. The Akismet API is so easy to setup and test that I figured I would add the Akismet comment test to the PSXMail plugin and make everyone’s life easier. In case others find it useful, you can download the latest version of this plugin below. Please report any bugs. NOTE: You have to have Akismet installed and activated as a plugin already with a valid Akismet Key. Upgrade: Simply upload the new file and Akismet will take care of everything in the background. Installation: Download the zip file, unzip, upload to your plugin directory and activate. Then create a new page with the word mailform within curly brackets as the content of the page. Now link […]

Feedburner and Google Subscribers The Google Reader blog said yesterday that Google reader was now reporting subscriber numbers. The Feedburner folks were right on the ball (as usual) and now their subscriber numbers take into account Google Reader Subscriber numbers as well. Some other people have been reporting astonishing numbers.

Looking for translators

I would love to publish WeblogToolsCollection in languages other than English. I know that I can install translator plugins and other software but machine translation leaves a lot to be desired, is slow and load intensive, readers miss out on the discussions and it is just less fulfilling as a read. Since there has been some interest in French and Spanish language translations, I am seeking a couple of authors who are willing to do the following: Translate all (new) posts from weblogtoolscollection.com into their respective language and make a daily commitment to posting changes and updates Moderate and answer comments Post any new material you find relevant to blogging in general and WordPress in particular Co-operate, share ideas and news with other authors Be user centric Fluent in French or Spanish. English language proficiency required. This is an experiment/brainstorm/brainfart and I am not sure whether there is even an […]

Weekly WP WishList for 2/13/2007

responses

This is a new series of weekly posts that will highlight requests that are sent to us from users looking for a certain tool or functionality. In many cases the tools are either just not there, someone has not thought of it yet, not possible to acheive or the solution has been completely overlooked by us. This would a good place for suggestions, links, directions and offers of help. I will not post the requesters contact information unless expressly asked to do so. If you have asked us for help and see your request in the list, please check back this post or subscribe to the comments. If you need help or have a request or a question that you would like added, please use the Contact Form in the top menu or email one of the authors of this blog. There will be a single WP WishList post per […]

WP 2.1 Performance

General, WordPress

As promised, here are the results of the possible performance enhancements that WordPress 2.1 has to offer. My disclaimers include the fact that these methods are mostly not very scientific and the server that this blog runs on also received a MySql upgrade before WordPress was upgraded. However, the results are stark enough that they still make a lot of sense. The above graph shows the processor statistics of this server over a period of a little over four weeks. These are 2 averages of RRD data, collected every five minutes by a custom written script. The little spikes at regular intervals is caused by a backup process that runs every night and is not unusual. The first large spike after the beginning of the fourth week (which is relevant) was caused by a large amount of data being backed up due to the upgrade. The actual upgrade was performed […]

Yahoo! Launches Pipes: Nik performs an in depth, albeit somewhat negatively jaded frustrated review of Yahoo! Pipes (which are clogged/down at the time of this post). The blogoshpere and the web20sphere is agog with analysis of this somewhat complex (or wait, was that somewhat simple) method of analyzing, cataloging and publishing web service data from anywhere and everywhere on the Internet. My take on it, without actually being able to use the application, is that the user interface is simple and the idea is very useful and attractive but it might not be designed/implemented with the average user in mind. I think Anil puts it very succintly: Pipes combines a remarkably sophisticated development environment with some core social features such as the ability to clone or share the web services you produce. The service is fairly approachable, but somewhat complex once you get just under the surface, and should be […]
