Our recent post on WordPress 3.2’s plans generated some interesting discussion, with the bulk of it centered around the discontinuation of support for Internet Explorer 6 in the Dashboard. Internet Explorer 6, now almost ten years old, was once a power house in its own right. Now, the browser is drowning under its poor support for web standards, a pool of modern web technologies that it can never support, and a flood of hacks that many sites need to employ just to provide a decent browsing experience for IE 6 users. IE 6 was superseded by Internet Explorer 7 in 2006, followed by IE 8 in 2009, and recently IE 9 last week. Of course, alternatives to Internet Explorer, like Firefox, have been around much longer. According to Microsoft’s own Internet Explorer 6 Countdown, 12% of the world still uses the ten-year old browser. The highest concentration of IE 6 users […]

WordPress, WordPress News

The plans have been laid for WordPress 3.2. In summary, this is going to be a much faster and lighter release with support dropped for long-outdated technologies. Here are the details: Faster Release Cycle – It’ll be here before you know it, or at least sooner than other releases have been. Faster and Lighter – With support for long-outdated technologies being dropped, this will be the fastest and lightest WordPress in quite some time. PHP 5.2.4 Required – The team will simply be dropping support for PHP 4, there won’t be very many new PHP 5 features added. MySQL 5 Required – Like above, the team will simply be dropping support for MySQL 4. IE6 EOL – No more fancy IE6-only hacks. The team will be officially discontinuing support for IE6 in the Dashboard and instead providing a “use a real browser” nag screen. New Fullscreen Editor – It’s time […]

It’s actually a rather entertaining interview with some thought-provoking and honest answers to some tough questions.

Blogger, Google’s 11-year-old blogging platform, will be kicking it into high gear in 2011 with a few improvements. Premiered this year at SXSW, Blogger will be launching a completely overhauled user interface, putting to rest an interface that has begun to show its age. Following on its heels will be new mobile themes, and a new content discovery engine, “that lets you uncover interesting and related content based on the topics of the blog you’re currently reading.” Google promises that there will be more to come, but they are not ready to reveal anything else at this time. 2011 is starting to sound like a big year for the blogging giant, and it will certainly be interesting to see what comes of it.
