Calais which is a metadata generation web service that is powered by Reuters is offering up a $5,000.00 bounty to anyone who can develop a plugin that meets the following criteria.

  • Tag auto suggestion: Using the content of the blog entry the plugin will provide a list of suggested semantic tags. For example, if the post talks about company “a” buying company “b” the plugin would suggest “Acquisition”, “Company A” and “Company B” as potential tags
  • Semantic cloud: We all love tag clouds and we’d like to take it a step further. The plugin should support the generation of a configurable semantic tag cloud of entities and facts derived from the blog’s content
  • GUID Incorporation: The Calais web service returns a Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) for each document submitted. The plugin should modify the RSS feed for the site to incorporate the GUID in a TBD location.

Calais looks like they will be holding future bounties. However, they have yet to post any information as to what those future projects might be.Calais has opened up a forum where you can discuss the bounty and contest programs. Good luck!

  1. It’s not clear with their posting but I suspect their suggestions for tag related functions won’t be similar to what’s coming in WP 2.5. I suspect they are wanting plugin developers to tap into the Calais API… The clue is that the only way to get the Calais GUID is to “submit content” to the service. Might be worth verifying if you could do so - because this would make a big difference in the design of the plugin (especially for the first two criteria).

  2. There is no functionality like this in development for WordPress 2.5 .

There is no tag suggest functionality in 2.5, it is auto complete functional when starting to type a term.

People have discussed changing the clouds in 2.5 to be semantic markup, that isn’t what the bounty item is about.

  3. So what is the difference between auto complete and auto suggest?

  4. They want a fully-functional, semantic auto-suggest feature for $5k? That seems a little low.

The only web-based service that I ever saw like that was done by Yahoo!, but it’s been defunct for a year or two, and if they were easy enough to make to be worth only $5k, all the SEO sites would have one.

The database alone would exceed the size of all but the biggest WordPress sites.

  5. Oh, my bad. They want the plugin to submit all of the blog posts to them and they will return the tags.
