What is Web 2.0? 5comments

Thanks for visiting! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. This blog posts regular Wordpress news, updates of themes, plugins, ideas, hacks, quick fixes and everything about blogging, especially about Wordpress. Go ahead, subscribe to our feed! You can also receive updates from this blog via email.

What is Web 2.0? Or more directedly, what does it mean to you? Is it a clever marketing ploy to sell more advertising and services than the market can really sustain? Is is another way to excite people into trying out new things on the web that previously would have gone unnoticed? I kind of go with the Dave Winer perspective of ” it’s simply a better version than the previous version”. Are you visiting the conference?

Simple PHP Gallery 2comments

Author: Mark Ghosh Category: General, Photolog Script

Simple PHP Gallery I don’t think the simplicity, ease of use and the absolute beauty of this software was quite obvious to me till tonight. I needed to put up about two hundred pictures in relative anonymity into a simple gallery that would not be a hassle to install. Al I have to say is….WOW. The install took all of twenty seconds, the gallery was up in another three seconds and all I did was move the pictures into the right folder and view the gallery page. From one developer to another, kudos to Paul Griffin! This is how software should be.

  • A Pending Ping Crisis?

A Pending Ping Crisis? I agree with almost every point that Kevin makes to illustrate how difficult the arena is, but I disagree that there is a problem. The distributed nature of the feature, along with innovative and resourceful programmers and their tools (e.g. Ping-O-Matic) will keep ping services alive. weblogs.com has reeled more than once before, blo.gs has reduced in importance and players have changed their positions in the market, but the ping services arena is not in any imminent danger of a fallout. NEVER, EVER trust the lftp “mirror” command to uphold the newest files switch!!

My server was hosed with last nights’ backup and we are back on the original server. Consequently we are missing a couple of posts and quite a few comments. The server will have to be re-imaged and I will have to restore everything from backup. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Can Bloggers Strike It Rich?

Can Bloggers Strike It Rich? When it comes to the profit potential of blogs, Nick Denton, founder of Gawker Media, calls himself a skeptic. Sceptic or clever businessman? I have nothing against Nick, but the more “professional bloggers” there are on the internet, the smaller the share becomes. Perhaps I’ve just experienced the Denton deflationary spin machine. :) (0)

Server Migration 0comments

Author: Mark Ghosh Category: General

This blog (along with a couple of other services) will be migrated over to a new server over the end of this week and into next. Please bear with me while I put it into place to make sure that this blog is faster and not down as often. During the move, Wordpress will be upgraded to the bleeding edge (again) and I will move some of my hacks and modifications into the 1.6 branch of code.

Wordpress Fitted Caps: I am dreaming of Wordpress fitted caps for $10 plus shipping. Anyone in for a few? (I need at least 4 orders)
[EDIT] Now I wonder if Copyright prevents me from ordering those caps.

207.net 8comments

Author: Mark Ghosh Category: General

What in the world is 2o7.net and why is it slowing down my web browsing considerably for the past few weeks??

After doing some research, I find that 2o7.net is actually Omniture and many of the sites that are slow to load are running some kind of web analytics software called SiteCatalyst from Omniture. Now I find that the Omniture nameservers do not want to resolve 2o7.net or 207.net as long as the request comes from the x.x.x.x subnet (my ISPs class B) Grrrrrr.

Why would a web company looking to analyze visitors block a whole class B from their DNS servers??

Free web statistics? Do not count on it! Ouch! Removed Webstats4u. Do you still get popups? (6)
  • Anconia RocketPost

Anconia RocketPost Another highly priced desktop blogging tool. This one lets you download all your existing posts to your desktop which could be really cool if it also downloaded the comments and/or other options on your weblog. It would be like a hybrid Userland/Wordpress blogging tool. (9)
  • Codase - Source Code Search Engine

Codase - Source Code Search Engine : Sweet! This search would have rocked my world exactly a year ago. This only works for C/C++ for now, is syntax aware and the repository is growing. This would be cool if scripting languages could be added. Via Email (1)

Sorry about the popups 11comments

Author: Mark Ghosh Category: General

UPDATE: IceRocket has confirmed that they DO NOT have popups on their “linking posts” tool and it looks like I am still having that problem. I will isolate the issue soon. IceRocket is not what is giving me headaches.

I had added an IceRocket “linking posts” search to this blog. I believe that it resulted in some unwanted popups (which I completely missed since I was using FF all this time). Needless to say, the Icerocket search is gone and I apologize for the cooties.

As a suggestion to IceRocket, you should not use my traffic to make money unless you make it extremely clear that you are going to do so and I expressly give you authority. Popups and popunders are pretty uncool anyways.

If popups still do popup, please let me know.

Spammers have started to exploit the Katrina tragedy with comment spams and link farms. That is pretty low.
