LinkyLoo, WordPress Plugins

Best uses of Ajax in WordPress Plugins: Ajaxian links back to a Mashable post on the best use of Ajax in a WordPress plugin. The Mashable post is called 30+AJAX Powered WordPress plugins. The plugins are divided into plugins aimed at the blogger and plugins aimed at the reader. The list is nice and GamerZ has a heavy presence in the lsit (as he should). I sparingly use AJAX on this blog beside the rating plugin from GamerZ but that is a personal preference.

LinkyLoo, WordPress Hack

Pure CSS Asides for WP: Alister has written a post on how to setup pure CSS asides (or Linkyloo in my case, such as this post) on a WordPress blog. The technique is quite interesting and can only be achieved in themes that use the Sandbox as the core. Andy also came up with a similar hack for WordPress.com

Turning the other cheek

My previous sponsored theme post followed by Matt’s support has generated a lot of buzz in the WordPress and blogging communities. Weblogtoolscollection.com readers’ opinion and the WordPress community’s opinion on this move are mostly positive and I appreciate your understanding and support. The sponsored theme community however, has been overwhelmingly negative and their dialog has degenerated into name calling and nastiness directed towards Matt and myself. Unlike Matt, some of the people that have berated me, called me names and disparaged my work, are people that I respect, who were in touch with me frequently and on whom I have spent a lot of time and effort on promotion in the past (and for the record, will continue to promote in the future). The negative responses were not fun to read through but the positives were also very heartening and encouraging. Let me say that it is very hard for […]

Feedburner announced today that they are now offering FeedBurner Integration for Blogspot Blogs but what they failed to mention was that now you can redirect the feed of your BlogSpot blog to any other URI. That should make a move from Blogger to WordPress (or any other blogging tool) completely transparent to your feed consumers. You could also insulate against or prepare for a future migration and move your feed over to another source. Thanks to Digital Inspiration for the tip.

Blogging News, HOW-TO, LinkyLoo

Google Adsense Ad Border with Rounded Corners: Apparently I was snoozing when this feature was released by Google but now you can have rounded corners on your Google AdSense ads. This could be a good way to increase your CTR, especially on blogs with AdSense blindness. I can see people coming up with very creative variations of the borders and colors to attract more attention to AdSense ads. I first noticed it on Google Blogoscoped while reading their article on AdSense Referrals.

Blogging News, Cool Scripts, LinkyLoo

ChipIn is an online tool to collect money from your blog or website and they have widgets that you can embed in your sidebar. It is a good way to keep track of your donations and an eye catching way of keeping track of your fund raising project. I personally like the backend interface and widget loads fast and you can choose many different applications to display the widget on including hosted WordPress blogs. At this time ChipIn does not charge any money to use their widget and the only fees you have to pay is for the PayPal transfer. This could be really useful to churches and other non-profit groups that regularly require donations for projects. ChipIn caught my eye when I was browsing a Church’s blog and they were collecting money for a new air-conditioner. I might set one up for the WordPress Plugin Competition. Know of anyone […]

FeedBurner MyBrand Now Free: Feedburner’s service that allowed publishers to publish their feeds through their own domain with the help of Feedburner, is now free of cost. This service used to cost upwards of $3 and might be a good way to retain the transparency and control over the feeds of your blog if you choose to serve them through Feedburner. [EDIT] Looks like Google decided to make the Pro Stats feature of Feedburner free as well. This is definitely good news!

11 Things Before You Publish

Business of Blogging

11 things to do before you hit the Publish button: Shankar Ganesh lists 11 things that you should do as a blogger before you hit the publish button. I have a few more that I would like to add. Sleep on (some of) your posts. I have often done this to keep myself from making bad choices in publishing some items. This is more for after I post something. I strongly believe that edits are a necessity and should not be avoided. If I make changes to a post after it has been published, I mark my posts to display the changes clearly. It makes the message clearer and adds continuity to the “story”. Preview posts before publishing them. This is more true for blogs with active feeds and especially important for blogs that use Feedburner. Formatting and WYSIWYG are nice but it is also quite easy to go overboard. […]
