GaMerZ’s WordPress Plugins Updated: If you are a fan of Lester’s plugins and have updated your blog to WordPress 2.3, you might want to check them out again. If you have never seen his list of plugins, it might be time to take a gander. I use a few of his plugins and have had nothing but good things to say about them. He has updated all his plugins to make them WordPress 2.3 compatible though some of them are not backwards compatible anymore. The 2 new plugins that he added to this mass release are WP-DownloadManager and WP-PluginsUsed.

Now that WordPress 2.3 Dexter has been released, it is time for everyone to upgrade and check out what the hoopla is all about. Just as in the WordPress 2.3 pre-release coverage, there are a lot of really good resources that discuss preparing your blog for it to be ready for the 2.3 upgrade. Since there is a bigger (relative term, bigger than upgrades in recent memory) chance that many of your plugins and themes might stop working with this new version, checking compatibility and making sure that everything will work as expected is even more important. Here are some resources that might help you make that leap. The WordPress Development Blog has a good article on Preparing for 2.3 I particularly like the list of compatible and incompatible plugins I also like the idea of switching your WordPress install to use Subversion for quick and painless updates Blog Security […]

Blogging News, WordPress

Many different sites and blogs have documented what they thought were their most desired features in WordPress 2.3. Since I am as excited about this release as I was about WordPress 2.0 (I consider 2.0 to be a significant milestone), I am collating them here with each discussed feature bulleted under each of the links. Design Adaptations Update Alerts for WordPress Inherent Tag Support More SEO Friendliness, better URI redirection Ryans’ Blog Database changes Taxonomy changes, Taxonomy API Plugin Compatibility Aiming for Independence Tagging Adding new tags to your own theme Adding a tag cloud More on Tagging in themes and tag importers from Small Potato UTW Importer Version 3 Template tags for Tags (yes, I know) Michael’s Blog (mdwaffe) Better Post and Page management Sam Ruby Atom Publishing Protocol support Plugin update notification Directly from WordPress Plugin Directory Better, faster, quicker, safer Faster javascript and wp-admin code and styles […]

WordPress vs Drupal: Todd Zeigler’s opinions on whether to use Drupal or WordPress to accomplish various publishing tasks depending on the relative ability of each software to excel in particular tasks. Though I agree with some of the premises, saying WordPress Mu is not quite ready for prime time is a very bad generalization and dependent on Todd’s experiences with a very particular need (developing a network of blogs that share content and is centrally managed) that he tried to fill with Mu.

Weblog Tools Collection web widget: If you ever thought that the material published on this blog might be helpful to your readers as well, you can now post a widget on your blog or webpage with the most recently published articles from WeblogToolsCollection.com The widget looks nice, is configurable and loads quite fast but that is not all. You can also publish your own widgets with content from any other source including your own blog by using the “blidget” (blog + widget) tool from Widgetbox. After you get your own blidget, make sure you check out the other available widgets on Widgetbox. The variety of widgets available is mind boggling and might be fun to tinker with on your blog.

Carnival Blog: Or I should have said “How to do a corporate blog, the right way”? The Carnival Blog, written by John and Heidi Heald (Carnival Cruise Director) is actually a lot of fun to read. It is very personal, very personable and reeks of the enthusiasm and the “fun times” that can be had aboard a Carnival Cruise Ship . The fun fact about this blog is that not only is it down to earth and chock full of John’s idiosyncrasies which make it a delicious read, it is also doing amazingly well in terms of traffic, readership and participation. The blog has attracted 600,000 visitors since its inception in March and continues to lead the WordPress.com viewer charts. Now in all fairness, I cannot see Michael Dell write about his trip to the local Sonoma winery in broken English, but the $64,000 trick is to engage your clientèle […]

Company bloggers can help put out fires: “This is what blogs are about. Everything has changed. We have to be transparent and honest. People are talking about this, they’re posting these images, we can’t ignore it. We have to deal with it directly.” That is a quote from the article by Lionel Menchaca who is Dell’s chief blogger. I could not agree more. Openness and transparency are the name of the game in corporate PR and will only be rewarded with accolades and public forgiveness. Though this is a somewhat jaded view of the world looking through rose colored glasses, I believe that blogs can be a fantastic vehicle for corporations to listen to their target audience and get their candid message across. There are lots of interesting examples in that article.

WARNING: TemplatesBrowser dot com

This is about a theme distribution site called Templatesbrowser dot com. I intentionally do not link to them. They are showcasing various authors’ themes and providing direct downloads for them. To make things much worse, they have added code to the footer of these themes that call the original site back and add hidden links to the themes once they are installed. It could also be used to run other malicious code. I strongly suggest that users stay away from downloading and using anything from them. This is pretty darn shady. Thanks to Milo, Derek and others for staying on top of this.
