One of the very first tasks I always perform on every new WordPress installation I do is to go into my user profile and turn off the visual WYSIWYG editor. I prefer to handle all my formatting markup myself because it gives me more control over the final product. The other day, Mark suggested that most ‘professional’ bloggers also prefer not to use the visual editor. So, the question I throw out to you, the reader, is this – which do you prefer to use, the visual editor or the basic editor, and why? Extra credit: Do you use any formatting plugins for faster, easier, on-the-fly markup? If you use one of these plugins, why do you use that specific markup plugin? For instance, I use TextileWrapper on my own blog because I like how easy it is to add just a single character or two to a line or […]

Many different sites and blogs have documented what they thought were their most desired features in WordPress 2.3. Since I am as excited about this release as I was about WordPress 2.0 (I consider 2.0 to be a significant milestone), I am collating them here with each discussed feature bulleted under each of the links. Design Adaptations Update Alerts for WordPress Inherent Tag Support More SEO Friendliness, better URI redirection Ryans’ Blog Database changes Taxonomy changes, Taxonomy API Plugin Compatibility Aiming for Independence Tagging Adding new tags to your own theme Adding a tag cloud More on Tagging in themes and tag importers from Small Potato UTW Importer Version 3 Template tags for Tags (yes, I know) Michael’s Blog (mdwaffe) Better Post and Page management Sam Ruby Atom Publishing Protocol support Plugin update notification Directly from WordPress Plugin Directory Better, faster, quicker, safer Faster javascript and wp-admin code and styles […]

WordPress vs Drupal: Todd Zeigler’s opinions on whether to use Drupal or WordPress to accomplish various publishing tasks depending on the relative ability of each software to excel in particular tasks. Though I agree with some of the premises, saying WordPress Mu is not quite ready for prime time is a very bad generalization and dependent on Todd’s experiences with a very particular need (developing a network of blogs that share content and is centrally managed) that he tried to fill with Mu.

WordPress 2.3 en Español: Alex has translated WordPress 2.3 into Spanish. Though a few more bugfixes might go into WordPress Beta 3, I believe it is mature enough that there will be few mismatches with the translation. Go grab the .mo file from Alex’s blog and follow his instructions to setup WordPress in Spanish. In related suggestions, have you upgraded to WordPress 2.2.3 yet

Cool Scripts, LinkyLoo, WordPress

Managing Spam Maintenance with Akismet Auntie Spam Version 2: engtech has updated his “Akismet Auntie Spam” greasemonkey script. This new version has some nice improvements including collation of spam from the same IPs, grouping by sender, better usability and quite a few other slick new features. If a lot of spam gets caught in your Akismet plugin and you need to run through them quickly to weed out false positives, this script is the ticket. I have been using it since the original beta and I like it.

There is a conference in London called The Future of Web Apps. It takes place October 3rd – 5th. There are lots of speakers and Matt is one. So, seeing as he’s here, want to meet up? The venue will be Excel London. They have bars we can use, their site lists travel links and if there are others at the conference they would be close by. Date will be October 4th, maybe October 5th too. Interested? (cross-posted from my blog because more people read this! I’ll followup any other details on my post there.)
