WordPress Hack

I have received a fairly large number of requests recently, asking for instructions on how to setup the “LinkyLoo” (or asides or small posts) category of this blog. They are a highly hacked series of implementations of Photomatt’s Asides. Fortunately for everyone, Podz has come to the rescue (again) and has a detailed set of instructions on how to set up Asides on your WordPress install. These instructions should work for WordPress 1.2 through the recent 1.5. Here is Photomatt’s writeup on his Asides implementation. There is also a plugin available from Rusty called Rustasides which does the same without having to modify any code. Rustaside is also compatible with WordPress 1.5. Finally, to post links, I browse to a page and use the “WordPress Bookmarklet” to add posts to the “LinkyLoo” category. Viola!

Got Blog?: WordPress 1.5 StrayHorn was released today (late yesterday?) and it is time for everyone to see what the fuss is about. Get your download while it is hot. WordPress upgrade parties are événements du jour! Podz has an excellent page on detailed upgrade instructions. The developer notes for WordPress 1.3/1.5 should be a good starting point for a changelog if anyone is interested.

WordPress Plugin : Lazy Image Layout: Now sure how I completely missed this, but it looks like a very cool image plugin for WordPress 1.2 which is still under active development (translation: getting better all the time). Lazy Image Layout (LZIL) is a plugin for formating images in posts using a terse syntax and automatic thumbnail sizing. It was developed to co-exist with PHP-Markdown 1.0

Referer Spam DoS

Web Ethics, WordPress Hack

Over the last couple of days my servers have been suddenly getting extremely slow and non-responsive at times. The system load averages climb to the hundreds and nothing responds. This has lasted from a few minutes to a few hours (the night before last). I found nothing out of the ordinary coming into the system and was having trouble figuring out the source of this DoS, until late last night. I was watching the server logs while working on some code and noticed that I was getting referer spammed. As I continued to look (and log) in amazement, a handful of machines made a large number of requests to my server, all with the tell tale referer spam clues (there were about 10,000 total requests in that attack). My understanding is that when the spammer requested such a large number of pages in quick succession, the server buried itself in […]
